Industrial polymer research and development services company Norner (Norway) has recently announced that it received certificates recognizing approval for marine coating testing.

The approval is an essential quality standard for test laboratories internationally and makes Norner an independent testing institute accredited for the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and Performance Standards for Protective Coatings (PSPC) test standards.

“Norner has developed a leading position in third party test services for protective coatings and invested in modern laboratory test facilities. We see an increasing need for test services for coatings and strive to offer a complete range of relevant tests for our clients,” the company wrote. “This new achievement is a big step to reach this ambitious goal.”

Industrial polymer research and development services company Norner (Norway) has recently announced that it received certificates recognizing approval for marine coating testing.

While the service company has long been awarded its ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation within protective coatings, the Lloyd's approval further proves that its laboratory is leading in quality management and competence. In addition, the latest certifications from Lloyd’s plans to provide its clients products with good credibility and a higher competitiveness through its full range of coating tests.

According to Lloyd’s list of approved institutes, Norner is one of few approved institutes in Europe for this type of testing. In addition, the company offers both third-party testing and pre-qualification testing of protective coatings within different applications including cathodic disbonding, corrosion, immersion and UV testing, as well as climate exposure procedures and various physical properties.

With its latest certification, Norner reports that it is planning to strengthen its position in the industry and has plans for further expansion both in manning and equipment. The company is currently working to build a new, state-of-the-art development and laboratory facility, which it is expecting to be completed by January 2022.

The coating lab is expected to be an essential part of the new building, while additional expansions have also been secured through the investment.

Other Coating Certifications & Standards

Earlier this year, in May, global provider of trenchless infrastructure products and services, Vortex Companies, LLC, announced that its 100% solids epoxy coating, Structure Guard, had passed critical chemical resistance testing in accordance with Greenbook section SSPWC 211-2.

The “pickle jar” test is required by the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works, and in exceeding the specifications for epoxy liners (SSPWC Section 500-2.8.5), the City has formally approved Structure Guard for use in sewer rehabilitation applications.

And last year, Nippon Paint Marine was reported to have its tank coating NOA60HS certified by the Norwegian Technology Standards Institution.

The self-indicating technology meets the requirements of the NORSOK M-501 standard and is specifically designed for use in ballast water tanks, oil and petrochemical tanks, and void spaces.

According to Nippon, the NORSOK standards were introduced in 1994 by the Norwegian offshore industry and continue to serve as global guidelines for adding value and ensuring cost-effective design, construction, operation and maintenance within aggressive offshore environments.

Specifically, the NORSOK M-501 provides the guidelines for the selection of coating systems, minimum dry film thickness and surface preparation to ensure quality standards for all aspects of the offshore industry.
