The August issue of the Journal of Protective Coatings & Linings is now online, available through options including an interactive digital edition, a full complement of web content and downloadable PDF.

Issue Contents

Opening up the August issue of JPCL, Editor-in-Chief Charlie Lange points out the importance of a contractor’s role in the industrial coatings industry and the issue’s inclusion of its annual Directory of Industrial Painting Contractors.

“Contractors are the ones spending all those man-hours out in the field, blasting and painting in challenging and sometimes hazardous conditions while wearing uncomfortable and restrictive safety equipment,” wrote Lange.

“They are the ones spending time away from their families—whether getting up before sunrise and home after sundown for a local job, or bunking in a hotel for months-long stretches on remote jobs—to bring home the bacon.”

Lange adds that contractors have always been JPCL’s primary audience and lifeblood, and that the journal is currently seeking their stories and what they’d like to see published throughout the year.

Following Lange’s letter to readers, the issue pulled together some of its most-read stories on PaintSquare.com in its Coverage section. Also included was an obituary remembering former SSPC Executive Director, Bernie Appleman, who passed away on Aug. 16 in Pompano Beach, Florida.

Appleman was known for his technical prowess and was instrumental in the development of SSPC’s original standards and specifications, as well as the creation of its signature Painting Contractor Certification Program and Protective Coatings Specialist certification, among other educational programs.

Other industry news topics include the U.S. Senate’s passing of a $2 trillion infrastructure package, a collection of coating suppliers' second quarter financial reports, the use of cool pavement coatings on a Montana Department of Transportation project and a reflection of last year’s Prestige Award winners.

Nominations are now open for the Prestige Awards program’s third year, which recognizes the top people, products and projects in the industrial coatings field. New this year, the 2021 Prestige Award process will be promoted in the pages of JPCL—including a feature on the award winners later in the year—presenting an exciting opportunity for recognition in the industry’s premier print publication.

Nominations are now open for this year’s awards for outstanding projects completed between March 2, 2020, and March 1, 2021. The deadline is Oct. 1.

In terms of this issue’s features, Andy Hopkinson, Ralitsa Mihaylova and Raouf Kattan of Safinah Group UK discuss the influence various parties have on ship coating processes and how the design of a vessel can affect the work, identifying areas where change is needed. The article, "The Future of Ship Painting," is a continuation of a prior a November 2020 JPCL feature and covers the coating specifications, standards, inspection methods and products in use today, and what will be necessary in the future.

Continuing on, the issue highlights what is commonly referred to as the “final taste test” in approving a new water tank lining. In “New Water Tank Lining: Passing the Taste Test,” Murray Heywood and John Sierzega from Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine discuss how potable water storage tank lining systems face a number of tests before a tank can be placed into service—including a final “taste test” of the water in the newly lined tank, the results of which can mean the difference between quickly returning a tank to service or draining thousands of gallons of water, refilling the tank and trying again. The article also covers the use of a new 100%-solids glass-flake reinforced epoxy lining system to ace the taste test during a tank rehab.

As a final installation, the August issue features JPCL’s 2021 Annual Directory of Industrial Painting Contractors. This year’s JPCL Directory of Industrial Painting Contractors includes listings for more than 380 painting contractor companies located primarily in North America, but also around the world. Listings are displayed in alphabetical order by country, and then by state or province. In addition to the information presented in the magazine, a fully searchable online edition of the directory, found at paintsquare.com/bg, contains supplemental information including a firm’s experience with other industries and specialty services.

In closing the issue, readers can also find the recurring Bid Bits and Paint by Numbers articles.

Looking to September

According to Lange, readers can expect the following topics in the September issue:

  • Coatings Buying Guide for Steel;
  • Protecting concrete wastewater structures;
  • The latest developments in the waterjetting industry;
  • Metalizing marine structures in the Alaskan climate;
  • Passive fire protection coatings for petrochemical service; and
  • Industry news, coatings community comments, upcoming events and more.

JPCL Archives, Subscriptions

Following the release of the May issue, the magazine will be added to the JPCL archive—containing 25 years of JPCL digital issues dating back to 1996—which covers a priceless collection of evergreen information, solutions to real-life problems, case studies, insight from experts and a historical record of the industry.

In 2020 alone, Technology Publishing CEO Brion Palmer reported that more than 25,000 industry professionals accessed the archives. However, the content is only available to current JPCL subscribers and in separating from SSPC, is no longer an association benefit.
