The July issue of the Journal of Protective Coatings & Linings is now online, available through options including an interactive digital edition, a full complement of web content and downloadable PDF.

In the Issue

Opening up this issue, Editor-in-Chief Charlie Lange reflects on the first half of 2021, which, after the release of COVID-19 vaccines, has been action-packed for both the coatings industry and the rest of the world returning back to normal.

“In the coatings world, the year opened with a major industry shakeup with the finalizing of the SSPC-NACE merger and the establishment of the AMPP organization—which led to the release of the new, independent JPCL in April,” wrote Lange.

“In the preceding three issues of JPCL, we’ve covered important industry events, such as the signing of a $2 trillion U.S. infrastructure deal and a number of company mergers and acquisitions, and continued to provide project case histories, technical articles and useful resources like the annual Equipment Buying Guide in the June issue.

“Certainly, we hope that all of use in the industry can ride some of this positive momentum heading into the back half of the year.”

Following Lange’s reflection and outlook on the rest of 2021, editors announced that JPCL had become the new home for the annual Prestige Awards program, which recognizes the top people, products and projects in industrial coatings.

For the first time, JPCL will serve as the official administer of the protective coatings industry honors and plans to promote the contributions of its selected nominees in print and digital editions of JPCL. Later in the year, the 2021 Prestige Award winners will also appear in a JPCL cover story.

Over the coming months, readers can expect to see ongoing coverage, including profiles of the program’s industry-leading judges, nomination previews, a recap of the 2020 awards program and more. For addition information about the awards program, please visit paintsquare.com/prestige.

The Applicator Training Bulletin has returned in the July issue, featuring the updated fundamentals of holiday detectors, which are most commonly used on coating systems designed for critical service such as immersion or chemical storage. Readers can find other reoccuring articles, such as Coverage, Bid Bits and Paint by Numbers, in this issue as well.

In terms of this issue’s features, consultant John Halewood discusses the first steps towards better blast-cleaning in “Selecting the Right Abrasive for a Better Blast: Understanding the origin and properties of different blast media can help you choose the safest and most effective solution.” Specifically, his article outlines how understanding the many ways in which abrasive blasting directly affects not only the coating, but also the productivity and, ultimately, the profitability of the painting project. Halewood also considers the effect different abrasives can have on the various aspects of a maintenance painting project.

Continuing on, the issue also features a multi-year coating rehabilitation project in, “Covering all the Bases: Coating Work at the Cowans Ford Hydroelectric Station” by Todd Ceol, Superior Industrial Maintenance Co., LLC. In the article, Ceol reports on contractors on the project had to get creative with its means and methods of completing the required work, detailing how they utilized cranes, barges, an onsite layaway building and a climate-controlled paint shop to finish the job.

In the issue’s final feature, Paul Atzemis and Tony Persutti, Carboline Company, recap the coating of 185-foot-tall regasification stacks at a liquefied natural gas facility in Medway, Massachusetts, where a silicon acrylic protective coating was applied on the scalding exterior surfaces of the stacks. Read about the project’s atmospheric conditions, logistical challenges and high-heat service involved in “Powering Up: Painting Stacks on the Fast Track.

Looking to August

According to Lange, readers can expect the following topics in the August issue:

  • 2021 Annual Directory of Industrial Painting Contractors;
  • The Future of Ship Painting, Part II: Standards and Specifications;
  • New Water Tower Lining Passes the Taste Test;
  • Metalizing Marine Structures in Alaska; and
  • Industry news, coatings community comments, upcoming events and more.

JPCL Archives, Subscriptions

Following the release of the May issue, the magazine will be added to the JPCL archive—containing 25 years of JPCL digital issues dating back to 1996—which covers a priceless collection of evergreen information, solutions to real-life problems, case studies, insight from experts and a historical record of the industry.

In 2020 alone, Technology Publishing CEO Brion Palmer reported that more than 25,000 industry professionals accessed the archives. However, the content is only available to current JPCL subscribers and in separating from SSPC, is no longer an association benefit.
