The Mackinac Bridge Authority has again announced that it has pieces of the Mackinac Bridge for sale, “due to popular demand.” This time, however, the prices are much more affordable than in comparison to previous sales and auctions.

For just $20, interested individuals can take home the ultimate Michigan souvenir, all they have to do is visit the bridge authority administration building in St. Ignace.

According to the Authority, the Mackinac Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in the western hemisphere, sitting at 8,614 feet with a total length of 26,372 feet. The Mackinac is the fifth longest suspension bridge in the world.

Prior Sales

Back in 2018, the Mackinac Bridge Authority announced that for those who had a passion for historic bridges would soon have the opportunity to own a piece of the Mackinac Bridge, as the Authority planned to auction off two-ton sections of the bridge’s original steel deck grating.

At the time, seven individual but identical pieces were available for bid, with each section measuring 5.5 feet wide, 38 feet long and 5 inches deep.

According to MLive, the grating was originally coated in lead-based paint. While most of the paint was reportedly worn away, buyers would be required to sign a “Hold Harmless agreement” related to both the lead paint and the grating’s structural integrity.

The Authority was also willing to cut down the grating for buyers into smaller sections, as the price of one cut was included in the bid. When the bidding began that April, bids were reported to range between $760 and $1,510.

Two years later, in November 2020, the Michigan Department of Transportation announced that it was making five sections of original steel grating from the Mackinac Bridge available through the Authority.

The five 60-year-old identical pieces were made available on GovDeals and were reported to be of the same size as the previous auctioned off sections. Although, this time around, the sections were also reported to feature corrosion and section loss appropriate to still of such age.

Buyers this time around were also expected to sign a “Hold Harmless agreement” upon purchase. In this collection of bids, the Authority again included the price of one cut in the original bid. However, no other cutting or manipulation of the grating would be completed, nor was the Authority responsible for the securing of the grates, but had agreed to assist in loading the structures for awarded bidders.

Funds generated by the sales were slated to be used by the Authority for the ongoing maintenance and operation of the Mackinac Bridge.
