Contractors are being sought by the Oregon Department of Transportation to paint the Columbia River Bridge in Salem, Oregon.

Work will include cleaning and painting rocker bents on Bridge 07949C at piers 168 and 171, and bearings on Bridge 07949C at piers 168 and 171 on the Columbia River Bridge. Bridge 07649E will require coating plate girder spans 160 through 163, and deck truss spans 165 through 167. Bridge 07949F will require coating deck truss span 171, and Bridge 07949C will include coating steel through-truss spans 168 through 170.

The chosen contractor will oversee surface preparation and coating of structural steel. Existing steel members will require abrasive blast-cleaning to Near White Metal Blast-Cleaning standards (SSPC-SP 10/NACE No. 2) to approximate Pictorial Standards of SSPC-Vis 1, or cleaning through water jetting to Very Thorough Cleaning standards (SSPC-SP WJ2). Steel members with existing coatings will be cleaned to Commercial Grade Power-Tool standards (SSPC-SP 15). Following cleaning, the contractor must conduct a soluble salts test on all surfaces except those where lead and chromate treating additives have been used.

Steel members will then be coated with the Oregon Department of Transportation standard three-coat organic zinc-rich system. The owner-approved coating manufacturers are Sherwin-Williams, Carboline and Wasser.

The existing coatings contain lead and chromates. Containment and disposal of waste according to SSPC-Guide 7 is required.
