Performance additives and chemicals company SI Group has announced several expansion plans over the past few weeks. Most recently, the company revealed plans to invest more than $50 million across three manufacturing sites in North America.

The investment is mainly to install what the company calls “globally competitive main antioxidant capacity to increase its supply” for market segments, which the company says demonstrates its commitment to the expanding U.S. chemical market with a focus on supplying raw materials to the region.

Performance additives and chemicals company SI Group has announced several expansion plans over the past few weeks. Most recently, the company revealed plans to invest more than $50 million across three manufacturing sites in North America.

This planned expansion aims to increase the security of supply by offering a fully integrated portfolio of phenolic antioxidants in the U.S. These performance additives are broadly used in segments such as construction and adhesives, as well as food packaging and automotive.

“This capacity expansion plan is a direct result of our focused efforts on growth and responding to our customers’ needs. The investment will increase domestic capacity and security of supply for our customers and strengthen SI Group’s position as a partner of choice,” said Chuck Reardon, SI Group’s VP – Plastics Solutions.

“We are pleased to be in a position to invest in SI Group’s capacity and support the success of our customers as well as bring new manufacturing and product capabilities and manufacturing jobs to our local communities.”

The new capacity is expected to come online in the second half of 2022. These projects are expected to create short-term construction jobs, followed by permanent manufacturing jobs once construction is complete.

SI adds that, with projected growth in the polyolefins market in the U.S., the expansions will enable SI Group to increase its domestic supply to match growing demand, and further strengthen its position as a key partner to its customers.

In addition to the U.S. investment, SI also announced tackifier capacity expansions in both India and France, with the goal to provide regional hubs for tackifier resin production and technology.

While tackifier resins are primarily used to enhance the performance and durability of tires, the company notes that the moves better position the company for its specialty additives in general.

“We have decided to grow capacity as another step forward in demonstrating our commitment to supporting our customers’ growth and positioning ourselves as a leader in specialty additives,” said Robert Kaiser, Vice President - Rubber & Adhesives Solutions at SI Group. “This expansion will not only benefit the region’s supply, but it will also provide superior solutions at the highest reliability to our customers globally.”

The India expansion is slated for completion in two phases. The first phase will be completed by the end of 2021 and the second phase will commercialize in the latter half of 2022. A timeline was not announced for the France project.
