Coatings and pigments manufacturer Sun Chemical, a subsidiary of DIC Corporation, recently announced that it has developed a new drier agent that helps expedite the drying of coatings and inks by accelerating oxidative polymerization without cobalt compounds.

The product—Dicnate ESG-130B—is part of the company’s Dicnate series, and it is currently being shipped to coatings and printing manufacturers across Europe as the product is compliant with European environmental regulations, according to the company.

Coatings and pigments manufacturer Sun Chemical, a subsidiary of DIC Corporation, recently announced that it has developed a new drier agent that helps expedite the drying of coatings and inks by accelerating oxidative polymerization without cobalt compounds.

In its press release, the company explains that driers are metal carboxylates that are mixed into coatings and printing inks to hasten curing and drying of coated and printed materials. While cobalt driers are most commonly used, cobalt compounds are highly toxic to humans and the environment.

In addition, the fact that cobalt mining is limited to only a few regions makes huge price fluctuations another concern. Accordingly, demand for cobalt-free alternatives has continued to increase, particularly in Europe.

According to DIC, the company sought to develop environmentally friendly driers that satisfy the requirements of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals.

The new product, which can be used with both coatings and printing inks, is made with manganese. The new drier, Dicnate ESG-130BZ, is for coatings, while Dicnate MV130A driers are for coatings and inks and uses plant-based esters as solvents.

“In partnership with our parent company DIC Cooperation, we are proud to offer these unique, environmentally-friendly new driers to our customers.” said Stefan Hellwig, Business Development and Technical Service Manager, Advanced Materials, Sun Chemical Corporation. “To support our continued focus on sustainability, these new driers offer highly effective drying performance at low environmental and health impact to satisfy the most urgent market needs.”
