In the soon-to-be-released April issue of Journal of Protective Coatings & Linings, Charlie Lange, Editor-in-Chief, shares upcoming changes and anticipations for the first, independent issue of JPCL.

Inside the Issue

As stated in previous articles building up to this inaugural issue of sorts, this month's JPCL will reintroduce itself as the fresh, independent voice of the industry, complete with a new look, subscription offers and benefits—including subscriber-only access to the 25-year JPCL digital archive and its wealth of technical information.

“We’re eager to unveil the new-look JPCL and continue to inform and engage the protective coatings community. We’ve been hard at work building the best JPCL possible, using reader feedback and comments to drive our direction,” said Lange.

“We hope the industry is as excited for the next era of JPCL as we are!”

To welcome returning subscribers and new readers to the technical journal, Lange will be opening the magazine with an editorial message. This is slated to be followed by an introduction of members of the newly formed JPCL Editorial Advisory Board. It is the Board’s sole mission to provide critically important and up-to-date information about adverse topics within the coatings industry.

The first, independent issue of JPCL, coming in April, will include a feature on railcar linings for food contact along with other feature articles, new departments, a welcome letter from JPCL Editor-in-Chief, Charlie Lange, and more.

Flipping through the magazine, readers can also expect to see new department debuts, including:

  • PaintSquare Pages: a compilation of current events, conversation, company updates and calendar listings available on;
  • Paint BidTracker Blurbs: A brief intro from PBT General Manager, Julie Birch, plus contract/project highlights, spending lists and more from the project lead service; and
  • Profiles: contractors, consultants and other influential individuals in the industry.

For its fourth consecutive year, JPCL will also be announcing its 2020 JPCL Readers’ Choice and Editors’ Award winners in the independent publication. For the awards, readers were asked to vote for their favorite articles published between August 2019 and December 2020. The voting period closed officially on March 31. The awards are classified in six categories:

  • Failure analysis;
  • Health and safety;
  • Materials technology;
  • Process technology;
  • Proficiency; and
  • Projects.

In terms of technical content, JPCL will continue to boast feature articles as well. In the April issue of JPCL, Lange reports that the magazine will feature industry topics such as:

  • Railcar linings for food contact;
  • Autonomous surface prep and application options for ships; and
  • Shop coating steel for a commuter rail extension project, among others.

On the unveiling of the new JPCL, CEO of Technology Publishing, Brion Palmer said, “We are excited to evolve into being the independent voice of the protective and marine coating industry. We look forward to continue in our role as the most respected, influential, and go-to publication for every industry professional working in the global protective and marine coatings industry.”

JPCL is part of the Technology Publishing Company’s network of paint and coating editorial products. Related websites and publications include PaintSquare Daily NewsPaint BidTracker and Water BidTracker.

JPCL Archives, Subscriptions

Following the release of the April issue, the magazine will be added to the JPCL archive—containing 25 years of JPCL digital issues dating back to 1996—which covers a priceless collection of evergreen information, solutions to real-life problems, case studies, insight from experts and a historical record of the industry.

In 2020 alone, Palmer reported that more than 25,000 industry professionals accessed the archives. However, the content is only available to current JPCL subscribers and in separating from SSPC, is no longer an association benefit.

Interested readers have the option for domestic one-year print and digital edition subscriptions and international one-year print and digital edition subscriptions. JPCL is offering one-year digital-only subscriptions and group subscriptions for domestic one-year print and digital editions as well.
