Coating consulting, inspection and services company KTA-Tator, Inc. (Pittsburgh) recently announced via email that it has officially opened its new corporate headquarters.

The news arrives just under a year after the company announced it had purchased a 17.65-acre parcel for $1.02 million for the development of a larger facility, in February 2019.

KTA had been at its RIDC Park West location since 1981. Over time, KTA had the building expanded from a 12,000-square-foot building to 33,500 square feet, in addition to leasing 2,500 square feet from a neighboring building for extra space.

Coating consulting, inspection, and services company KTA-Tator, Inc. (Pittsburgh) recently announced via email that it has officially opened its new corporate headquarters.

“The primary purpose of the new location is to facilitate more efficient workflow and allow for expansion of both staff, R&D and testing facilities,” said KTA Chief Executive Officer, Dan Adley at the time.

“The facility will house metalworking [operations], material testing facilities, analytical laboratories, training facilities, instrument sales and service facilities and office operations for corporate services and all five business units. We foresee adding 20 or more new staff over the next few years.”

Bear Construction and Cannon Design were retained as the design-build team for the project. Work on the new 48,000-square-foot building began in June with a move-in date slated for November 2020.

According to KTA, the newly completed two-story structure sits on 18 acres of land, of which approximately 9 acres have already been developed for future growth.

Inside, the facility boasts:

  • Nine laboratories occupying a cumulative 7,000 square feet (including a new climate-controlled calibration laboratory);
  • A 3,300-square-foot Instrument Sales & Service Department for equipment inventory;
  • A showroom area featuring new product displays and an instrument use video screen for a micro-learning environment;
  • A 1,400-square-foot training facility for in-person and remote learning opportunities;
  • A recording studio for podcast and webinar broadcasting, as well as video production;
  • A history wall and lighted glass showcase containing artifacts of the company’s earliest work (including inspection instruments used and distributed since the 1960s);
  • A lobby that leads to a two-story great hall, what the company totes as the marquis of the headquarters building that proudly displays the company’s core purpose and values;
  • An electric vehicle charging station; and
  • A KTA Steel Composite Test Panel Channel, which serves as the entryway’s canopy.

Recent News at KTA

In November, KTA announced the retirement of its President, Kenneth A. Trimber, which went into effect on Dec. 31.

Trimber, an icon in the coatings and corrosion industry, worked at KTA since 1968, where he started on a part-time basis until his graduation from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1974. Over the course of his 52-year career, Trimber has amassed many certifications and has been the recipient of a variety of prestigious awards.

Trimber is a NACE Certified Coatings Inspector Level 3 (Peer Review) and SSPC Certified Protective Coatings Specialist. He is a Past President of the SSPC, and has served as the Chairman of the Commercial Coatings Committee, Chairman of the Committee on Surface Preparation, Chairman of the Visual Standards Committee, Chairman of the Task Group on Containment, and was a member of the Standards Review Committee. He is also Past Chairman of ASTM D1 on Paints and Related Coatings, Materials, and Applications. He has been formally recognized by industry associations/publications on numerous occasions including being selected by JPCL in 2004, 2009 and 2012 as one of the Top Leaders and Thinkers in the Coatings & Linings Industry. Trimber was also named the SSPC Honorary Life Member in 2015, which is awarded by the SSPC Board of Governors and recognizes “long-term activity on behalf of the organization.”

Taking Trimber’s place is none other than Bill Worms, former Executive Director of SSPC: The Society of Protective Coatings (now part of the newly formed Association for Materials Protection and Performance). Worms officially joined KTA on Oct. 1 as the company’s new President and CEO-Elect. In adjusting to his new role, Worms is slated to work closely with CEO Dan Adley for the duration of the transition. Near the end of December 2021, Adley also plans to retire to part-time status and Worms will officially become KTA’s next CEO.

Prior to joining the KTA team, Worms worked as the executive director at SSPC for five years where he was responsible for all strategic and operational aspects of the association. Before working at SSPC, Worms also held VP Commercial Operations, VP Flex Foam Raw Materials of the Polyurethane Business Unit, and Management of Sales & Marketing, Advertising, and Materials Management positions at Bayer Materials Science, where he was employed for 26 years.
