Although Technology Publishing Co. has wrapped up PaintSquare Connect, its signature virtual event for the protective and commercial coatings industries, an archived library of its featured webinars remains available to registrants until May 31.

Over the course of the next few months, PaintSquare Daily News will be highlighted some of those webinars, reminding readers to experience these educational presentations before they’re gone.

The event was co-sponsored by Carboline, Finishing First (Powered by LMCI), McBrayer & Associates and Sherwin-Williams.

Support for Sustainable Projects

Mark Thomas, Vice President of Marketing, and Cory Brown, Executive Vice President, both of Tnemec Company Inc., presented “Support for Sustainable Projects,” on Nov. 10, 2020, in the conference’s Commercial track.

According to Tnemec, when working on a sustainable building project, high-performance coatings might not be the first thing that’s though about, since traditional coatings are typically too high in VOCs and emissions to meet the strict requirements of green certification programs. But sometimes high-performance coatings are still an important factor in these projects.

LEED certification and Living Building Challenge standards limit the amount of allowable emissions from coatings, for example, and national air district regulations also narrow the field of choices for eco-conscious coatings applicators. All of these sustainability requirements have restricted the use of solvent-borne products, but some coating manufacturers have inventive, low-emitting coating systems.

In this presentation, the presenters review common green-building programs, discuss the qualifications of these sustainable building protocols and explain what contractors may encounter with coating selection and use as well as required documentation for the owner.

In his day-to-day work, Thomas supervises and coordinates Tnemec’s marketing department, inside sales team and segments of the sales department. In addition to his Tnemec experience, he is a LEED AP BD+C and NACE CIP Level 2 Coating Inspector. He holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in integrated marketing communications, both from the University of Kansas.
