JPCL, SSPC End 37-Year Relationship

On Dec. 22, at a virtual town hall meeting in which NACE, The Corrosion Authority, and SSPC, The Society for Protective Coatings, presented plans for their new, combined organization, leaders announced the termination of the publishing agreement between Technology Publishing Company and SSPC.

This ends a 37-year partnership that made JPCL magazine a member benefit and the “official voice” of SSPC. The reason given for discontinuing the arrangement is that JPCL “is owned by a third-party publisher.”

This year’s March issue of JPCL will be the final issue jointly published under the TPC-SSPC agreement. Starting with the April issue, TPC will publish JPCL independently.

On Dec. 22, at a virtual town hall meeting in which NACE, The Corrosion Authority, and SSPC, The Society for Protective Coatings, presented plans for their new, combined organization, leaders announced the termination of the publishing agreement between Technology Publishing Company and SSPC.

The Future of JPCL

“We always valued the relationship with SSPC,” said Brion Palmer, CEO of TPC. “We were more than just a publishing partner. We were strategically aligned in many ways to help SSPC grow and prosper.

“That said, the JPCL team is now excited to reposition the magazine as the independent voice of the global industrial coatings community. We have a lot of changes and enhancements we will introduce to the publication that weren’t possible under the former publishing agreement. We look forward to sharing details very soon.”

For decades, JPCL magazine was included with an SSPC membership. Now, to continue to receive JPCL and access its vast digital archive, individuals and companies will need to subscribe. The JPCL article archive is exclusively available on PaintSquare.com/archive.

“We have always priced a subscription to JPCL in accordance with the price of an SSPC individual membership,” said Palmer. “We wanted potential subscribers to strongly consider joining SSPC and receive JPCL as a member benefit. We didn’t want the publication to compete with SSPC membership.

“Now we can be more aggressive with our pricing so JPCL is affordable to any industry professional, student or other interested party. We are also developing some very nice premiums to coincide with a subscription.”

He added that specific information on subscribing to JPCL will be made available in the next few weeks.

Editor’s Note: In the SSPC membership renewal notice sent out during the transition process of the SSPC-NACE merger, a JPCL subscription was referenced as a member benefit for the duration of the renewal (1-3 years). This is not accurate. Members of SSPC will not receive JPCL after the March 2021 issue.

I continuously enjoyed your contribution to shared wisdom and will send you some ideas that will help you transition "protective coatings" to include such items as barriers to "preserve" humans just as you have previously focused upon preservation of physical assets. I earnestly look forward to a bigger scope your great journalism can contribute to more individuals globally. Thank you again for what I consider a solid past of contributions and shared wisdom to bring strength to institutions losing talent via retirements, budget cuts, and other issues. ((Sorry if I am not up to date about any politically correct merging of two societies for whatever reasons.))

I hate to see this happen, but also understand they why. I will continue to subscribe to the publication and wish it the best of success.

Thank you Everyone at JPCL for your great quality work as the official journal of SSPC. I am looking forward to the “new” JPCL with a broader scope and coverage of the entire protective coatings industry.

Thank you for your great work, we look forward to the new chapter for JPCL. When we voted for the merge, we thought JPCL was part of the deal, as the official voice of SSPC we believed your role was very important, now it looks like SSPC without a voice.
