Lake Cohoon Bridge Rehabilitation Awarded

The City of Suffolk has awarded a contract in the amount of $2,258,777 to Allan Myers, Inc. of Glen Allen, Virginia, for the rehabilitation of the Lake Cohoon Road bridge structure in Suffolk, Virginia.

Allan Myers was the lowest of four apparent bidders. Additional bids included:

  • Infrastructure and Industrial Contractors Southeast, Inc. of Virginia Beach, Virginia, in the amount of $2,777,767.77;
  • Curtis Contracting of West Point, Virginia, in the amount of $2,889,550; and
  • Corman Kokosing Construction of Westerville, Ohio, in the amount of $3,153,350.42.

The project bid Nov. 10.

A notice of intent to award was issued Nov. 17.

Scope of Work

The City of Suffolk has awarded Allan Myers, Inc. a contract to provide all plant, labor and supplies in order to complete the Lake Cohoon Bridge Rehabilitation project. The existing structure spans a CSX railway on Lake Cohoon Road and will include recoating of structural steel members.

The City of Suffolk has awarded a contract in the amount of $2,258,777 to Allan Myers, Inc. of Glen Allen, Virginia, for the rehabilitation of the Lake Cohoon Road bridge structure in Suffolk, Virginia.

The awarded contractor will oversee recoating existing structural steel members. The existing coatings are in poor condition. Beams, diaphragms and bearing devices are pitted and scaled with rust, especially at bearing areas over piers. Surface rust and peeling paint are present at bearing areas and bottom flanges. Pack rust is present between the top flange of the end diaphragms and underside of the deck throughout the entire bridge structure.

The steel will be recoated with an inorganic zinc-epoxy-polyurethane system; this system is subject to change according to project requirements. Approved manufacturers are Carboline, ICI Devoe, Elite, Indmar, Induron, International Paint, PPG, Sherwin-Williams, Tnemec, U.S. Coatings and Valspar.

Disposal of materials is required. Certifications for SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 are also required. SSPC-QP 2 certification will be required for contractors and subcontractors performing field surface preparation in existing structural steel with hazardous coatings.
