Technology Publishing Co. is inviting all PaintSquare Connect attendees to join PaintSquare editors Charlie Lange and Brandy Hadden on Thursday, Nov. 12, at 4 p.m. for a presentation of the 2020 PaintSquare Prestige and Elevation Awards highlighting the year’s best in industrial and commercial coatings.

The Prestige Awards program focuses on the protective coatings professionals who make the industry work, the coatings and equipment used daily in the field, and the projects that bring all of these aspects to life.

This year’s awards are divided into four major categories:

Top People

Each nominee is judged on a set of criteria that includes the following.

  • Industry impact: How has this individual's work contributed to the protective and marine coatings industry as a whole? What innovations or practices has this person championed in order to improve the protection of steel and concrete structures on the whole?
  • Personal achievement: How does this individual set himself or herself apart from others in the same field? How has this person gone "above and beyond" in comparison with most others in the industry?
  • Professional interaction: How has this individual had an impact on others around him or her in the workplace and the industry in general? How are his or her colleagues better off for working with him or her?
  • Extracurricular: How does this individual's impact extend beyond the workplace and the industry? Has he or she contributed to the community in general as a volunteer, mentor or community figure?

Top Innovations

Winners will be chosen based on the following criteria.

  • Does the technology or product provide a solution for an existing challenge in the industry that had previously resulted in product failures and/or loss of money on the part of asset owners?
  • Is the technology demonstrably different from other products that had been on the market prior to its introduction?
  • How does the technology impact contractors in terms of ease of use, reduced time and/or labor, or other factors?
  • Has the technology been employed successfully on real-world projects successfully?

Top Products

The categories are:

  • Surface Preparation and Coating Application
  • Safety and Access
  • Inspection

  • Coatings for Steel
  • Coatings for Concrete
  • Specialty Function (intumescent, anti-graffiti, anti-fouling)

Top Project

This category aims to recognize the players involved in a notable industrial protective coatings project completed between March 2, 2019 and March 1, 2020.

This project may employ some of the nominated Top Products and Innovations, or involve some of the Top People chosen by the industry. Projects can be submitted from the Bridge and Highway, Water and Wastewater, Marine and Energy (including oil and gas production) sectors.

The Elevation Awards, PaintSquare’s commercial honors program, recognize projects ranging from residential exteriors and commercial renovations to floor coatings and air barriers throughout the commercial coatings industry, as well as a Judges’ Choice Award, which acknowledges an outstanding architecture project that best exemplifies the seamless combination of compelling aesthetics and high performance in use of coatings and other substrate treatments.

Project categories for the Elevation Awards include:

Exteriors, Commercial + Public Buildings

This award is given for the effective use of coatings and other decorative treatments to achieve aesthetic effects that enhance the exterior of a commercial building—such as those used for retail, hospitality, lodging or entertainment—or a public building, such as a legislative chamber, a school or a railway station.

Interiors, Commercial + Public Buildings

This award is given for the effective use of coatings and other substrate treatments to enhance the interior of a commercial or public building. Examples include buildings used for retail, hospitality, restaurant, entertainment, transportation and education.

This award is given for use of coatings to enhance the appeal of a building renovation or retrofit, in terms of both aesthetics and functional value, such as energy performance. [The project may be a residential, commercial or public structure.]

Floor Coatings + Treatments

This award is given for outstanding achievement in selection and installation of a floor coating or treatment that excels in aesthetic effects, durability and maintainability. [Applications must make a persuasive case for how a project achieves durability/maintainability.]

Air Barriers + Moisture Management

This award is given for a liquid-applied air barrier system, including related taping and flashing materials, that excelled in design and installation detailing. [Applications must include photos of the project in progress, and reference to specifications/design documents.]

Roof Coatings + Systems

The Roof Coatings award will be given to a successful roof coating project that has achieved demonstrable energy savings and life extension of the roofing substrate on a building. [Projects must be judged on technical merits, with energy use measured during the past three to five years. [Applications can reference energy cost records and include an endorsement/statement from the building owner.]

The Elevation Awards also celebrates new products in concrete, building envelop, roofing, green and specialty function categories.

The awards ceremony—open to all PaintSquare Connect attendees—will feature comments from PaintSquare’s panel of industry expert judges.

Registration for the conference is still open, and registrants are now able to the program's curriculum as well as browse and enroll in sessions as they are added to the event website.
