On Monday (Oct. 5), Tnemec Company Inc. announced via emailed press release that it has officially launched its online voting platform for the 2020 Tank of the Year Competition.

“This year’s contest looks to be another interesting one,” commented Scott Keilbey, Director of Sales – Water Tank Market. “We have nearly 300 water tank nominations of all varieties this year, from all over the U.S. and Canada.”

The public can vote for their favorite water tank at www.tankoftheyear.com for two weeks, until 5 p.m. CST, on Oct. 16, when online voting will close. Following the commencement, the water tank receiving the most online votes will be named the “People’s Choice” and receive an automatic bid as a finalist for the Tank of the Year title.

“Every year, the water tank nominees continue to get more and more innovative,” added Keilbey. “Based on the tanks submitted this year, we feel this trend will continue. And we can’t wait to see what tank people choose as their favorite.”

The People’s Choice winner and the 11 finalists selected by committee will be announced on Oct. 19. The 2020 Tank of the Year will be announced on Oct. 23.

All finalists and nominees will appear in Tnemec’s 2021 water tank calendar, beginning with the Tank of the Year winner in January.

Last Year’s Winner

Last year, a municipal water tank in Wamego, Kansas won both the People’s Choice award and Tank of the Year. The pedestal water tank won out over more than 300 other water tanks. Nearly 20,000 votes from both the U.S. and Canada were cast.

Painted by Classic Protective Coatings (Menomonie, Wisconsin) with eight different colors, the Wamego tank was selected by a panel of judges who chose based on artistic value, local significance and challenges encountered while the project was underway.

The Wamego tank joined the Oz Museum and an actual yellow brick road as another local Wizard of Oz-themed attraction. (The Oz Museum serves as a home for the largest permanent public display of Oz artifacts in the world, with the collection including an original flying monkey, costumes and production notes from the original 1939 MGM film, “The Wizard of Oz.”)

The project was completed in June of last year, with BG Consultants serving as the engineer.

“The Wamego tower represents a connection to the city’s Oz museum, which includes a large collection of Oz memorabilia and artifacts,” said Randy Moore, Director of Sales—Agency Development & Industry Affairs for Tnemec.

“The 500,000-gallon Wamego water tank was repainted with a HydroFlon fluoropolymer coating system, which will help the many hues on the tank retain their color and gloss over time.”
