A design contract was recently awarded for what is being touted as the world’s longest bridge to use structural timber.

The contract for the design, permitting and further development for Norway’s E6 Moelv-Roterud infrastructure project was signed earlier this month by Norway’s road authority Nye Veier and Berinor Ans, the joint venture of Besix and Rizzani de Eccher.

A design contract was recently awarded for what is being touted as the world’s longest bridge to use structural timber.

Other companies involved in the project include Norwegian contractor AF Gruppen, designer and consultant Multiconsult and architect Knut Selberg.

About the Project

The structure will include a 1-kilometer main span over Lake Mjøsa and an 11-kilometer section of a four-lane motorway.

The use of timber represents a benchmark for the use of sustainable materials in major infrastructure projects, according to Besix.

“Sustainability aspects, including limited greenhouse gas emissions and quality landscape integration, are among the primary objectives of Nye Veier and Berinor,” read a joint statement.

“This is an important step in the project we signed today,” said Nic De Roeck, area manager of Besix in Europe. “It allows us to move forward together towards the realization of a bridge that will be remarkable and unique, especially from a technical and environmental point of view.”

The JV has worked on other major European projects before, including the Crown Princess Mary Bridge in Denmark, which was completed last year and was the first cantilever bridge built in Denmark since 1970.
