Events DC, the convention and sports authority for Washington, D.C., selected a contractor last week to demolish the historic 59-year-old RFK Stadium.

After regulatory approvals and pre-construction work, Gilbane will be responsible for abatement, selective demolition, superstructure demolition, cutting/capping of utility infrastructure, removal and disposal of all debris and filling and grading the site.

About 40% of the work is to be completed by certified small business enterprises.

The RFP for the work was issued last September, with the hope of awarding the contract sometime in the first quarter of 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic delayed that timeline and the project budget was cut for savings.

Now, demolition is expected to begin in 2022.

“While it is bittersweet to see this treasured 59-year old stadium go, we look forward to paving the way for the future of this historic site, building on the stadium’s legacy and reimagining the full 190-acre campus with amenities for residents and visitors to enjoy,” said Gregory A. O’Dell, president and chief executive officer of Events DC.
