Global coatings company AkzoNobel released its 2021 Color of the Year Tuesday (Sept. 8), highlighting a hue that the company calls “a warm and grounding neutral shade that gives us the courage to embrace change.”

“As unprecedented events and experiences become commonplace, it’s no wonder that people are feeling more off-kilter with the modern world,” the company said in its press release.

“According to our extensive global trend research, what people need most right now is to feel the ground beneath their feet. When we can take comfort in the stability of simple things, we’re emboldened to express ourselves, stand up for what we believe and make new connections from the past to the future.”

Brave Ground is a shade is a warm neutral that aims to bring balance as well as the “courage to embrace change.”

The palettes (which the company notes can not only be used by the architectural paints industry but also for automotive, specialty, powder and woods coatings industries) include:

  • Expressive – aiming to boost creativity and free-thinking, this collection adds various shades of reds and pinks;
  • Trust – slight earth tones including neutral grays and soft browns aim to highlight the support and balance goals of the color of the year;
  • Timeless – armed with more contemporary colors, this group adds shades of yellows and clays to energize without being overpowering; and
  • Earth – the rest of the natural colors that weren’t in the Trust palette are featured here, including blues and greens, to bring a calm and restorative feel to a space.
