Specialty chemical company Nouryon announced earlier this week that it is starting development of a new hydroperoxide manufacturing facility at its current site in Ningbo, China.

Slated to be complete in the second half of 2021, the facility will have an annual capacity for 35,000 tons of TBHP/TBA. According to the company, TBHP is an intermediate in Nouryon’s organic peroxide production process and is also used as a polymerization initiator for coating resins and other products. TBA is a raw material used both for the production of organic peroxides and other specialty chemicals, the company said.
Nouryon also noted that it has entered into a long-term partnership with Nanjing Jinling Huntsman, which will provide raw materials for the new facility.
“This is an important step in integrating our regional supply chain for TBHP, which is currently imported from overseas,” said Johan Landfors, President of Technology Solutions at Nouryon.
“Demand for TBHP and TBA continues to rise in Asia, and our new facility will ensure that we can meet that demand for years to come.”

This announcement comes just weeks after Nouryon announced that it completed the acquisition of J.M. Huber Corporation, a carboxymethyl cellulose business.
Huber manufactures a complete line of CMC grades and serves customers in 80 countries, generating sales of around 135 million euros (roughly $147 million).
The company also operates a manufacturing plant and research and development facility in Äänekoski, Finland, and employs 248 people, who will all transfer to Nouryon.
