Amtrak recently announced that it has selected the development team for the renovation of Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station.

The team was one of a handful of those shortlisted after a request for qualification in 2018.

The Project

Updating the nearly 100-year-old facility—the third-busiest station for Amtrak—is part of a larger $10 billion infrastructure plan known as the 30th Street Station District Plan, that has Philadelphia redeveloping about 175 acres of rail-yard site over a 35-year period.

Amtrak

Amtrak recently announced that it has selected the development team for the renovation of Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station.

The plan was devised and introduced a few years ago, after Amtrak led a $5.2 million study along with Drexel University, Brandywine Realty, SEPTA and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

The work on 30th Street Station is seen as the first major step in the project and Amtrak says it has invested $100 million in refurbishments to the building, including improvements to the facade, restrooms, elevators and escalators, and the restoration of the bronze entrance doors.

Amtrak put out the RFQ in early 2018 and shortlisted four teams that November, which were:

  • Brandywine Realty Trust: Brandywine, Pelli Clarke, Pelli Architects, WSP, CBRE;
  • G30 Collaborative: Meridiam, Gensler, Gannett Fleming, Turner Construction, Aramark, MarketPlace, WeWork;
  • PHL 30 Vision LLC: JLL, FXCollaborative, AKF, Pennoni, ARUP, Jingoli, JLL; and
  • Plenary Infrastructure PHL: Plenary, SOM, Pennoni, Arora, Urban, AKRF, Gilbane Building, Johnson Controls, Vantage, Republic.

What Now

Amtrak has selected the Plenary Infrastructure Philadelphia team to form a master development partnership.

“Gray 30th Street Station is the third busiest station in our national network and this partnership underscores Amtrak’s commitment to deliver on its vision of a world-class station experience for all travelers, the station as a grand gateway to Philadelphia and a tribute to honor the lifetime of service Congressman Gray provided to Philadelphia and Pennsylvania as a tireless advocate for disadvantaged communities,” said Senior Executive Vice President Stephen Gardner.

“While this is certainly a challenging time, the redevelopment of Gray 30th Street Station is part of a core set of essential projects and strategic objectives across all the different dimensions of the company that are critical to our long-term strategy and success, and we are continuing to advance those projects.”

The team will oversee phases of design, construction, financing, operation and maintenance, according to the Philly Voice.

Interior aspects of the project include improved amenities and retail offerings as well as an expansion of the station’s commercial options. Renovations to the restrooms, ticketing, baggage, waiting rooms and lounges are also on the list.

Outdoor components include separate pickup and drop-off sites on both sides of the station and updates to pedestrian and transit flows, as well as a public plaza.

Crews have also been cleaning the building’s limestone and updating and restoring windows on the property.

The station part of the city’s larger project is estimated to cost between $300million and 400 million. The first phase is expected to begin in 2021 and be completed in 2025.
