“The future generation of Minnesota’s skilled construction workers are attending Minnesota’s middle and high schools right now,” said Sarah Lechowich, Senior Director for the Construction Careers Foundation. “That’s why the Construction Careers Foundation launched the Construction Trades app, the first free mobile app for youth to explore careers in Minnesota’s construction industry.”
The app is part of a state-wide effort to attract students to the construction trades and help them with building their careers.
Once in the app, users can personalize their experience by selecting their career interests, location and educational background. By filling out this information, students are then connected to apprenticeship programs throughout the state.
After that, push notifications alert the use about new opportunities as well as deadlines and open houses and career fairs.
Recent App Development
In addition to online-based education tools, app development is also being used to increase safety measures on job sites.
Just last year, researchers at Glasgow Caledonian University (Glasgow, Scotland) developed an app that will reportedly be able to save lives and reduce the number of injuries on construction projects worldwide.
The project was led by Billy Hare, a construction management professor at the GCU in the School of Computing, Engineering and Built Environment, and focuses on finding hazards through a building’s design (which accounts for half of all construction accidents in the United Kingdom, according to the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health).
