In considering the circumstances revolving around the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Journal of Protective Coatings & Linings has released its May issue through an all-digital format.

Inside the Issue

Opening with its tradtional SSPC On The Front Line section, SSPC Director of Technologies and Communications Michael Kline goes over the next steps the organization plans to take after members recently voted in favor of the combination with NACE International, The Corrosion Society.

The story is mirrored by additional SSPC news, involving newly issued concrete blast standards in an article written by Michael Damiano, SSPC’s Senior Technical Advisor.

In moving through PaintSquare’s Top of the News and Coatings Conversations, the issue reflects on a premature failure of an intumescent coating experienced on an exterior steel supporting stairways and walkways at a public housing project. Throughout the piece, investigations, blistering consequences and possible solutions are discussed by authors Raymond S. Tombaugh, KTA-Tator, Inc.; and Randy Harpel, Nibbi Brothers General Contractors.

In considering the circumstances revolving around the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Journal of Protective Coatings & Linings has released its May issue through an all-digital format.

The magazine also reflects on California Water Service’s water tank maintenance program and how industry professionals can plan for corrosion prevention and mitigation. From different sections to different types of corrosion, Bryan Wilfley, P.E., California Water Service, goes over how Cal Water has developed a tank maintenance program to reduce operational costs and improve service reliability.

In the field of abrasive blasting, JPCL also looks at key points to consider when choosing an abrasive, including project cost, health regulations and specifications. The feature by Brad Gooden, BlastOne USA, also examines some of the most commonly used abrasive types, comparing their properties, safety considerations and effects on surface profile.

Additionally, the May issue of JPCL also profiles another 2020 SSPC Structure Award in its ongoing series, the Mackinac Bridge and the FDR Drive-South Street Viaduct. The article recaps two bridge painting projects that received E. Crone Knoy Awards during SSPC’s 2020 Structure Awards. The projects involved SSPC QP 1 and QP 2 certified contractors and were awarded for demonstrating innovation, durability or utility in the coatings work completed. Awards were presented at SSPC Coatings+ 2020 this past February.
