AECOM Launches Virtual Meeting Tool

Earlier this month, design firm AECOM launched an interactive web-based tool that allows clients to engage and consult with stakeholders on projects from their computer or mobile device.

The technology was developed as a more resilient approach to community engagement which allows clients to engage with a wider audience who are unable to attend in-person meetings during consultation periods.

“In the face of unprecedented challenges, it was critical that we create a seamless digital environment to visualize projects, meet virtually and bring communities together in partnership with our clients around the world,” said Kevin Carlson, AECOM’s global lead for Digital Transformation.

“Over the next few months, we will continue to focus on bringing new collaborative experiences, driven by our global expertise in digital delivery, to the marketplace.”

In using the platform, not only are client and stakeholder able to practice better communication, but like an in-person meeting, users are able to engage in a personalized virtual reality.

The demonstrations are complete with visuals of consultation materials, sound demonstrations, videos, maps, plans and pop up banners. The platform also allows for instant feedback through public reaction which can be captured and saved, in addition to an on-hand expert chatroom.

“We already use a number of digital tools during our community engagement sessions such as visualizations, sound demonstrations and interactive apps, so it makes complete sense to bring them together on a digital platform,” said Andy Thomas, AECOM’s head of Visualisation and VR in EMEA.

“The use of digital engagement tools enables stakeholders and communities to understand proposals, allowing them to provide an informed response and participate in the consultation process. This tool will allow that process to reach a wider audience, allowing more widespread buy-in for major infrastructure projects.”

AECOM reports that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Public Health England, among others, have already signed up to use the public consultation tool.

A demonstration of the tool can be viewed, here.
