Preservation Pennsylvania recently released its annual Historic Preservation Awards, featuring the Ralph Modjeski Award, which this year honored the Penn Street Bridge rehabilitation project, in Reading, Pennsylvania.

According to the Reading Eagle, the project involved strengthening the bridge to support heavier traffic and extend its lifespan.

The span (also known as the Penn Street Viaduct), which opened to traffic in 1913 and was designed by Benjamin Herman Davis and completed by Levi H. Focht and Son, sees more than 22,000 commuters each day.

“The work that was done gave respect to the historic appearance of the bridge while allowing it to meet modern safety requirements,” said Mindy Crawford, Executive Director of Preservation Pennsylvania. “That doesn’t always happen. A lot of historic bridges are altered and many are lost, replaced by modern structures.”

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation—the owner of the bridge and recipient of the award—said that the trick to the three-year, $43 million project was communication among the contractor J.D. Eckman and engineer Gannett Fleming, as well as city and county officials.

The planners for the project reportedly used 1911 bridge drawings as reference in restoring the features of the concrete-arched bridge, such as balustrades, river outlooks, obelisks and lighting.

“The Historic Preservation Awards recognize a passion for the past, applaud achievements in the present. and inspire a history-rich future for Pennsylvania,” said Crawford.
