Reported late last month, local muralists Ian Wilkinson and Ishmael completed a collaboration project in Asheville, North Carolina, on a historic silo in the town’s River Arts District.

Updated with a more current message, “Stay Home,” the silo now provides a reflection of requested action taken by the nation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

River Arts District Silo

According to the River Arts District, the silo is part of Earle- Chesterfield Mill Company, which occupied multiple mill and silo buildings adjacent to the Hatchery. The structure was built in 1955, however, some of the older structures date back to 1905.

In 2011, the Hatchery was repurposed for artists, potters and a restaurant. The first studio stroll in the area, however, took place in 1994. The history of the district also notes that the area hadn’t taken off until roughly 2005.

Since gaining popularity, the location hosts the largest annual RAD event, where over 200 artists open for the second full weekend in November.

As reported by ABC News channel 13WLOS, prior to its new paint job, the silo had previously been painted to read “Stay Weird” and prior to that, “Good Vibes.”

While Wilkinson claims that the request to repaint the silo was made anonymously, he also adds that the “Stay Home” message is meant to be a calming gesture and should be taken as a a message of care-and-love, that urges families to take COVID-19 isolation as an opportunity to reconnect, stay close and to stay healthy.

On his Instagram account, Wilkinson writes, “Stay home for a little while. Make a slip and slide, take a nap, enjoy the ones you are staying home with.”
