Recently, SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings announced the launch of “SSPC Cares,” an initiative and recognition of kindness to inspire others to give back to communities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“SSPC members are involved on a local level across the globe as individuals and as companies, providing leadership and expertise that help to protect people, infrastructure and the environment,” SSPC stated in its press release.

In highlighting its members, SSPC touches on the ways that the organization is supporting first responders and communities in the battle against COVID-19.

Action Against COVID-19

Announced at the end of March, after a donation of surgical masks from Dejin Feng of Rader Coating Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., SSPC was able to make a donation to the Acuity Specialty Hospital of Southern New Jersey in Willingboro, New Jersey.

According to the report, a lifetime member’s daughter has been working at the hospital, fighting against the virus.

Other Industry Contributions

Earlier this month, global high-performance polymers company Covestro announced that it has been providing aid through in-kind and money donations.

According to Covestro, the company has been providing raw materials for the production of products such as medical devices, safety goggles for medical staff and hospital mattresses, which are then supplied to health and care facilities in the vicinity of the plants in numerous countries.

Covestro has also made its existing material software—such as 3D printing technology—freely accessible for 3D printing of mask holders and is looking into how to 3D print ventilator components, using its materials and technical expertise.

Paint and coatings company, Sun Coatings (Tampa, Florida), has also announced that it had repurposed part of its 90,000-square-foot plant to manufacture hand sanitizer. According to the release, during the first week of production, Sun Coatings was able to donate 350 gallons of hand sanitizer.

Also in Florida, University of Central Florida researchers are working to develop a protective coating that would specifically target and kill the COVID-19 virus.
