Recently, the United States Environmental Protection Agency released a list of approved disinfectant products that meet the criteria in fighting against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

According to coatings manufacturer Rust-Oleum (Vernon Hills, Illinois), six of its products have since been added to the list, and are proven effective on another human coronavirus like SARS-CoV-2 and as well as other similar viruses. The products can therefore also be used against SARS-CoV-2 when used in accordance with the directions for use against coronavirus on hard, non-porous surfaces.

Recently, the United States Environmental Protection Agency released a list of approved disinfectant products that meet the criteria in fighting against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

Rust-Oleum reports that its Krud Kutter Heavy Duty Cleaner & Disinfectant is a ready-to-use, one-step, heavy duty cleaner combined with a fume-free disinfectant. It aims to deodorize and kill 99.9% of bacteria and germs, according to the company.

Similarly, the company also produces another Krud Kutter Heavy Duty Cleaner & Disinfectant, however, the latter product is a no-rinse disinfectant cleaner that aims to disinfect, clean and deodorize in one step. The product can be used on hard, non-porous surfaces such as vinyl, plastic, glazed ceramic, glazed porcelain, chrome, sinks and countertops.

Mean Green Anti-Bacterial Multi-Surface Cleaner cleans grease, grime and is reported to also kill 99.9% of bacteria. The product is suited for household kitchens, bathrooms and other areas. The Mean Green brand also produces a Pine Power product which is a multi-purpose cleaner, deodorizer and disinfectant.

For a deeper clean, Rust-Oleum produces a Moldex Disinfectant Concentrate, which the company reports is “a one-step germicidal, disinfectant cleaner and odor neutralizer designed for general cleaning, disinfecting, deodorizing, and controlling mold and mildew on hard, non-porous inanimate surfaces in the house and around businesses.”

The last Rost-Oleum-made product approved by the EPA for SARS-CoV-2 protection is its Concrobium Disinfectant Cleaner. Different from its cleaning counterparts, Concrobium is a plant-based disinfection made for professional restoration contractors. The product works as a bactericide, virucide, tuberculocide and fungicide that contains no harmful chemicals. Additionally, the solution has no warning labels and requires no PPE.

Other coatings companies with products featuring virus-killing properties mentioned on the EPA-approved list include BASF and Evonik.

An updated list has been published by the American Chemistry Council, which can be found here.

I did not find any of the Rust-Oleum products on the linked EPA list. This article seems misleading, as the EPA has not listed ANY of the products. The basis for effectiveness of these products is solely from Rust-Oleum, with a PaintSquare endorsement. Rust-Oleum put together what appears to be a misleading press release, implying their products were endorsed/listed by the EPA without actually making the claim. Perhaps they use similar or the same active ingredients as listed products. It's unclear. In addition, the press release does not list the required "contact time" to destroy the virus. Is it 5 minutes? 15 minutes? Something else? Please note that I'm making no judgement on whether these products are effective or not - just that the presentation of information is misleading and incomplete.
