Concrete and cement-mix manufacturer Quickrete recently announced a partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the design of what it calls “next-generation concrete for use in the production of large-scale structures through a 3D printing process.”

According to the company, it will use an additive manufacturing system developed by ORNL to deliver specially formulated concrete for new construction capabilities.

Concrete and cement-mix manufacturer Quickrete recently announced a partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the design of what it calls “next-generation concrete for use in the production of large-scale structures through a 3D printing process.”

The new concrete is in alignment with the DOE’s Advanced Manufacturing Office’s Multi-Year Program Plan with the mix aiming for the strength, curing time and durability to construction buildings, energy installations, transportation infrastructures and other large-scale structures faster, more affordably and with less energy consumption, the duo says.

The mix is reportedly designed as a pumpable, low- or zero-slump material that sets quickly, which aims to make it ideal for printable projects.

“We look forwarded to working with Quikrete, developing a novel material for large-scale construction, and we anticipate this project will have significant industry impact,” said Brian Post, R&D Scientist at ORNL.

“As a leader in advanced manufacturing, DOE’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility at ORNL is uniquely suited to advance this technology.”

This two-phase collaboration will reportedly conclude in two years.
