The National Roofing Contractors Association recently sent a letter to President Donald Trump to express concerns over what are defined as “essential businesses” and “essential workers” during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The NRCA has also released a list of resources for contractors.

The Letter

The letter asks the administration to provide clear guidance regarding what an essential industry and essential worker is and noted that the roofing industry should be cited as essential.

“Recent emergency orders and guidance threaten the ability of roofing contractors, manufacturers, distributors and other industry employers to operate and aid in the response to the coronavirus pandemic,” the letter reads.

The National Roofing Contractors Association recently sent a letter to President Donald Trump to express concerns over what are defined as “essential businesses” and “essential workers” during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The NRCA goes on to note that the roofing industry—including all manufacturers, raw material suppliers, distributors and contractors—is an essential $100 billion sector with an estimated 1.1 million employees altogether.

“We are integral to the infrastructure that will enable our nation to see through our current times and help our communities rebound quickly,” the association says.

“The products we make and install protect hospitals, grocery stores, pharmacies, and other businesses actively providing critical care and resources to thousands of Americans in need of assistance during this time of crisis, as well as families who are being asked to shelter in place or otherwise take every measure to remain indoors.

“For example, as the role of hospitals becomes ever more critical in providing care that our fellow citizens need at this time, it will be critical that roofing companies are able to quickly fix roof leaks or provide other essential services to keep these buildings operating safely.”

The letter also notes that as the spring and summer seasons approach, the NRCA needs to be able to respond to impacts of extreme weather and natural disasters, and adds that professionals are employing measures to mitigate infection risk.

“The roof is the first line of defense against the elements and extreme weather, and there is nothing more important than a sound roof in protecting American families and businesses as they take action to address this crisis and sustain our economy,” the letter concludes.

Resources

In the spirit of clarity and information, the NRCA has also compiled a list of resources and a separate webpage for contractors looking for direction during the health crisis.

“NRCA recognizes this is a time of uncertainty and wants to provide information and resources addressing various issues you may be facing as you manage your business through the crisis,” the association noted in a press release.

Resources include:

  • information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, World Health Organization and Occupational Safety and Health Administration;
  • legal resources, including contract provisions;
  • insurance resources; federal financial assistance;
  • employers’ and employees’ rights; and
  • community notices.
