Late last Friday (March 6), NACE International, The Corrosion Society announced that its annual CORROSION 2020 conference and expo would be postponed until June 14-18.

The news came after a NACE Board of Directors’ vote regarding the health and safety of the event’s attendees, speakers and exhibitors amidst the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) outbreak. At the time of the announcement, six cases of the virus were already confirmed in Houston.

Previously, the conference was slated to take place from March 16-19 at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston.

About the Postponement

According to the reports, NACE held close consultations with the George R. Brown Convention Center, conference hotels and vendor partners, which all determined postponing the event would be best practice as to ensure the health and safety of all conference attendees.

In confirming that the postponement runs as smoothly as possible, NACE says that it is currently working with all conference venues and vendors with the move process and has posted a collection of frequently asked questions on its website.

While more details will be released in the coming weeks, NACE has confirmed that all events associated with CORROSION 2020 will be postponed, including events hosted by the NACE Foundation and NACE Institute and other activities organized by NACE International.

Regarding some of the questions on general information and scheduled meetings, NACE reports that the National Research Shipbuilding Program Surface Preparation and Coatings Panel meeting that was scheduled in conjunction with CORROSION 2020 is expected to have more information released by Wednesday.

More information about the planned ISO meetings is also slated to be released by Wednesday, but the organization supposed that the original March dates will either be delayed, held in conjunction with CORROSION 2020’s new June dates, or the meetings will be held virtually on dates and times to be determined.

NACE Corrosion Research Consortia meetings are also being considered for delays in conjunction with the new conference dates or held on different dates, with locations to be determined. NACE reports it is working directly with Consortia stakeholder leaders to determine best options for Consortia member and customer needs.

As for exhibitor concerns, NACE confirms that the floorplan and layout for the event will stay consistent for the June conference. However, should exhibitors require refunds for the event, they can either donate to the NACE Foundation, delay their attendance to CORROSION 2021 or have their CORROSION 2020 exhibitor fee refunded. If interested in any of these options, exhibitors are asked to contact Jackie Foster (Jackie.Foster@nace.org).

Similar protocol goes for slated attendees of the conference and expo. Should an individual be unable to attend the June dates, they too can donate, delay or receive a full refund. Those interested in taking any of these routes of action may contact the First Service team at firstservice@nace.org.

“It is disappointing that we will not be able to bring our professional community together at this time, but we are looking forward to hosting everyone in June,” CEO of NACE International, Bob Chalker wrote in a statement.

“We want to thank all our exhibitors and attendees for their patience, support and feedback. CORROSION 2020 was on track to be one of our best conferences ever and we will do everything we can to provide the same valuable content and business opportunities this June.”

The FAQ forum also adds that, “NACE conference staff recognizes there are a variety of implications for speakers/presenters surrounding the postponement of CORROSION 2020 until June 2020. NACE conference staff is developing a path forward for all speakers/presenters and will provide more detailed information by Monday, March 16, 2020.”

Looking toward the future, CORROSION 2021 was announced to take place in Salt Lake City, Utah, from April 18-22, 2021. Registration and housing information is expected to be released by October this year.

American Coatings Show & Conference Postponed

In addition to CORROSION 2020 declaring a postponement, organizers of the American Coatings Association's American Coatings Show and Conference 2020 have also announced that event will be postponed to a later date in 2020 that is yet to be determined.

"While we are unaware of any reported cases of COVID-19 in Indiana or Indianapolis, postponement of ACS/ACC 2020 was unavoidable as the show could not proceed as scheduled due to forces beyond our control," organizers said.

Originally, the conference was slated to take place from March 31-April 2 at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis. Like CORROSION 2020, the postponement was decided as a protection method for the health and safety of all attendees from the continued developments surrounding COVID-19.

ACS/ACC reports that it will continue to keep its exhibitors, attendees and stakeholders informed about rescheduling and hopes to host the show at the same venue later this year. New dates for the event intend to be announced as soon as possible.

Should anyone have questions regarding the postponement, inquires can be sent to acshow@paint.org.
