Announced last week, the Broadway Bridge—located in the City of Minot, North Dakota—was awarded the 2019 Gold Star at the Ready Mix & Concrete Products Association’s annual convention.

The bridge was awarded for excellence in concrete in the bridge category.

About the Project

Originally built in 1962, the Broadway Bridge (part of U.S. Route 83) received its first rehabilitations in 1971 when the structure was expanded to two lanes of northbound and two lanes of southbound traffic. According to the North Dakota Department of Transportation, the bridge sees approximately 30,000 local Minot- and traveler-owned vehicles per day.

The city of Minot, in conjunction with the North Dakota Department of Transportation and in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration decided to replace the structure and in December 2016, awarded the project to general contractor Lunda Construction (Black River Falls, Wisconsin).

Project engineering firms on the job included Burns & McDonnell (Kansas City) and Bartlett & West (Topeka, Kansas). Strata Corporation (Grand Forks, North Dakota) served at the concrete supplier, but also performed concrete work for the new roadway.

Construction on the project began in March 2017 and was completed over two years in two phases. Approximately 8,500 cubic yards of concrete was used for the project. The new structure is 86 feet wide and 822 feet long.

“The Broadway Bridge runs through the heart of our city, and is vital to the everyday lives of our community’s residents,” said Minot City Engineer Lance Meyer.

“We’re proud of the work done by our staff, the North Dakota Department of Transportation, and all the contractors and subcontractors, including Strata Corporation, which supplied the concrete for this project. It was a total team effort to rebuild this critical piece of our city’s infrastructure.”

Recently Recognized Bridge Projects

Last year, Deep Foundations Institute (Hawthorne, New Jersey) announced the Marc Basnight Bridge (which replaces the Herbet C. Bonner Bridge), in North Carolina, had been awarded its 2019 DFI Outstanding Project Award for innovative concrete piles.

The Basnight Bridge team consisted of engineering company HDR; general and foundation contractor PCL Civil Constructors; and owners North Carolina Department of Transportation. The award was presented to the team at the DFI 44th Annual Conference on Deep Foundations Oct. 15-18, in Chicago.

At last year’s SSPC Coatings+ conference, the Walt Whitman Bridge (Philadelphia/Gloucester, New Jersey) received the George Campbell Award.

And this year, the E. Crone Knoy Award—recognizing outstanding achievement in industrial or commercial coatings work that demonstrates innovation, durability or utility—went to two projects. The first being the South Tower of the Mackinac Bridge, in Mackinac City, St. Ignace, Michigan and the second went to FDR-South Street Viaduct in New York City.

Other bridges to receive awards at Coatings+ 2020 included: The Mario Cuomo New N.Y. Bridge won the Eric S. Kline Award in recognition of outstanding achievement in industrial coatings work performed in a fixed shop facility; and the Bayonne Bridge received George Campbell Award for a single outstanding achievement in the completion of a difficult or complex industrial coatings project.
