Coatings+ 2020, SSPC’s annual conference and exhibition, wrapped up last Thursday after an action-packed week full of coatings-related activities and events.

The event, held Feb. 3–6 at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center, featured the annual SSPC awards luncheon, honoring the industry’s top people and projects; an exhibit hall with more than 135 companies along with a new live demonstration stage and activity zone; a technical program spanning many of the different topics relevant in the industry; opening and closing ceremonies and more.

For the fourth year in a row, SSPC’s Student Poster Session, which highlights projects from undergraduate and post-graduate students conducting protective coatings-based research, was on display in the exhibit hall throughout the week.

A panel of SSPC judges considered this year’s entries and decided on the first-, second- and third-place posters.

The 2020 Coatings+ Student Poster winners are:

  • First Place: “Synthesis and Incorporation of Model Hydrogel Particles to Quantify and Understand the Importance of Water Management in Protective Coating Systems,” by Jessica Davison, The University of Southern Mississippi;
  • Second Place: “Identification of Biofilm Formation on a Biocide Based Antifouling Coating by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS),” by Samanbar Permeh, Florida International University; and
  • Third Place: “Sustainable Synthesis of Latex Materials from Renewable Plant-Based Monomers,” by Zoriana Demchuk, North Dakota State University.

SSPC congratulates the winners and the other students for their work and dedication to finding solutions to the different challenges the coatings industry faces.

Town-Hall Recap & Closing Celebration

Coatings+ also offered members the chance to take part in three different town-hall meetings on the potential combination of SSPC and NACE International into one organization. Conducted by key members of the SSPC and NACE leadership, the meetings sought to update members on the status of ongoing discussions and provide a direct forum for member feedback on the subject.

On Thursday morning, after the three Coatings+ town halls had been conducted, SSPC Executive Director, Bill Worms, and NACE CEO, Bob Chalker, stopped by Carboline’s exhibit hall booth to further discuss the potential combination on the Carboline Tech Service Podcast.

Along with Carboline’s Director of Technical Service, Paul Atzemis, and Content Strategist, Jack Walker, Worms and Chalker recapped the week’s town halls, touched on some of the member reactions they had received during the week and set the stage for further discussion and action moving forward.

NACE will be holding its own town hall meetings at its annual conference, Corrosion 2020, March 15-19, in Houston. Both organizations encourage their members to email their comments and questions about the process.

SSPC staff and attendees officially wrapped up Coatings+ 2020 at the annual closing reception, sponsored by LiUNA. Held at the official conference hotel, the Hyatt Regency, the closing blast brought together first-time conference attendees and industry veterans alike for one more chance to network and celebrate a successful week before returning home.

In addition to more refreshments and entertainment, Coatings+ attendees had extra incentive to stick around and help the conference close with a bang, as LiUNA raffled off a Harley Davidson motorcycle to one lucky winner. Coatings+ 2021 is scheduled for Phoenix, Feb. 1-4, 2021, at the Phoenix Convention Center. For more information, visit sspc.org.
