The British Coatings Federation released figures last week on the coatings industry’s waste, recycling and accident rates in 2018, reporting a record improvement.

The BCF is the trade association representing the U.K. paints, printing inks, powder coatings and wallcoverings sectors, and estimates that the sector is estimated to be worth 11 billion pounds ($14.6 billion) to the U.K. economy today, with an indirect impact on 140 billion pounds of GDP.

The British Coatings Federation released figures last week on the coatings industry’s waste, recycling and accident rates in 2018, reporting a record improvement.

The numbers released on Dec. 5 show a record number of manufacturing companies reported zero landfill waste, at 53%, compared to 45% of companies in the previous year. Waste per ton of production decreased 7.4% in 2018, with just 2.4 kg per ton of production, and 9% of all waste, sent to landfill.

The BCF also noted that almost all incinerated waste was used for energy recovery, and the recycling rate was at a record high, at 64% of waste disposal compared to 17% in 1996 when records began, and a 2% increase on the previous year.

Manufacturing sites also reported a record low number of injuries per 100,000 man-hours in the last two years at 0.07 in 2017 and 0.11 in 2018. This is eight times lower than the rate of 0.85 in 1996, the federation notes.

"The industry is working continuously to reduce waste, improve recycling and eliminate accidents,” said Tom Bowtell, BCF President.

“I’m proud of the industry’s record improvement levels, which shows our commitment to worker safety and the environment.”

The data was gathered through BCF’s Coatings Care Program, in which nearly 40 member sites report on a variety of health, safety and environmental Key Performance Indicators. Improvements are rewarded with the presentation of the annual BCF Coatings Care Progress and Coatings Care Overall Best Performer Awards.

This year, global coatings company AkzoNobel won awards for Coatings Care Overall Best Performer and Customer Service. The company was also highly commended in the Excellence in Training category, with Dulux being honored in the Marketing Campaign of the Year Awards segment.

Coatings sector representatives met with parliamentarians, academics and Lords in February of this year to recognize the importance of the industry in driving manufacturing growth in the United Kingdom post-Brexit.

The group launched the “Surface Engineering Advanced Coatings Leadership Forum” in the House of Lords, hosted by Lord Whitby, President of the Surface Engineering Association. Several associations and professional organizations, including the BCF, are behind the initiative and work of the forum, which aims to stimulate a higher take-up of apprenticeships, to ensure the sector maximizes its relationships with academia, delivers on innovation and embraces digital manufacturing.

In April, the BCF launched its Coatings Career Hub, a digital resource that promotes career opportunities in the coatings industry. The move was prompted by BCF members calling for a better, more accessible resource, the organization said.
