Ondrej Císler, from AOC Architects, working in collaboration with Petr Tej, from the Klokner Institute at Czech Technical University in Prague, recently developed a connection between the living and the dead: a bridge running over the Dretovice stream in Vrapice, Czech Republic, that connects to a nearby cemetery.

According to ArchDaily, the structure, fabricated from freeze-resistant, fiber-reinforced, ultra-high-performance concrete and completed earlier this year, is part of a pedestrian trail that runs from the village to the nearby burial ground. The project cost 27,000 euros (roughly $29,950).

Project Details

The project, known as “Bridge Over the Dretovice Stream,” was developed with the use of advanced concrete casting technology. Overall, the roughly 3.5-ton structure has a 10-meter-long (32-foot-long) span and a cross-sectional width of 1.5 meters, with 1.4 cubic meters of material used. The design features a doubly curved geometry that stabilizes the structure.

In the beginning of development, a prototype was built to undergo load testing. The dark gray color of the bridge was created with the addition of mineral pigments to the concrete mix, while etching and hand sanding added other details to the surface.

According to designboom, the project’s client was the City of Kladno, and the endeavor was started in 2018. A sculpture dubbed “The Guardian” was designed by the studio of Jan Hendrych, and the piece itself, based on baroque archetypes, is situated in the landscape to add to the overall spatial composition of the bridge.

AOC Architects, based in Prague, previously completed work on residential villas, among other projects. The Klokner Institute at CTU focuses on the research and development of ultra-high-performance concrete and high-performance composites.
