Hong Kong Boasts Skyscraper Church

Worship in Hong Kong has reached new heights after a firm designed a space for the Wesleyan House Methodist International Church that consisted of a 21-story high-rise.

Rocco Design Architects were tasked with fitting a 118,000-square-foot plan inside an 8,600-square-foot corner plot, so they did what they could: They went up.

The High-Rise

According to the firm’s founder, Rocco Yim, the building marks the first time that a church has occupied the whole of a high-rise.

"This is not the first skyscraper for church functions, but is apparently the first where religious gatherings take place both close to the ground and at the top-most floor," said Yim in an interview.

Most of the church’s public functions are on the lower levels, as the lobby entrance is at the street level with the main sanctuary just above.

Above that is a children’s room, an activity room and a choir room, followed by several floors of office space, another activity room, staff residences and, finally, a sky chapel on the top floor—all stacked on top of one another.

"As a general principle, spaces that cater for large groups are located close to the ground and in the basement. More private functions including clergy's quarters are located near the top," said Yim.

"The exception is the sky chapel, located at the very top to enjoy the view and the ambience, and to serve more special functions such as funerals and weddings."

The exterior of the building, which stands 311 feet tall, features a subtly curved facade with a solid, east-facing core with casement windows opposed to a curtain wall. Meanwhile, the north and south facades feature large glazed windows that intend to maximize daylight and views.

The project, which was completed last year, is expected to receive a local green building rating.
