New renderings were released earlier this month for the future home of Inter Miami CF, the forthcoming Major League Soccer team owned in part by David Beckham.

Illustrations for the $966 million stadium arrive as the team is also working on rebuilding a different stadium that needs to be completed in time for the 2020 season, which will begin in March.

Stadiums on Stadiums

Right now, work is busy on rebuilding Lockhart Stadium, in Fort Lauderdale, which housed the former MLS Miami Fusion (1998-2001) that folded because of poor attendance. The site has been demolished and crews are now on nearly a 24/7 schedule to finish the stadium in a matter of months. It will be a temporary home to the Inter Miami squad, and eventually the permanent home for a forthcoming lower-level, United Soccer League team as well as a training facility.

Officials report that at any given time on the job site there are currently 225 workers on deck, and Inter Miami Director Paul McDonough said that just as much care is being taken with the design of this stadium as the future permanent home in Miami Freedom Park.

“This takes up a ton of time and everything keeps me up at night,” McDonough said. “But it’s OK. We’re just on an accelerated timeline. There’s so much stuff going on. But this is expansion. It’s awesome. Everything we’re doing here, we’re trying to do it right.”

The new Lockhart stadium will eventually seat 18,000 and aims to be ready by an ambitious target date of February 2020.

“We’ll be ready to be home," said co-owner Jorge Mas. "I’m anticipating that maybe our first or second game will be away, I’m anticipating that we’ll be opening in mid-March or the latter parts of March for our home opener. That should give us sufficient time. We’re targeting finishing the Ft. Lauderdale stadium on Feb. 15 so we can have a few events there first so when we have our home opener, it’s smooth.”

What Now

As for Freedom Park, the team is full speed ahead there, too.

“With Miami Freedom Park, we’re ongoing. We got a go-ahead from the city of Miami voters in last year’s referendum to negotiate a lease, bypassing the RFP (request for proposal) process," Mas said.

"We’re in the final stages of doing that. I’m hopeful in the next 45-60 days that we’ll get a green light from the city. We’re very well advanced on both tracks. The Miami Freedom Park project will be a wonderful project for the city, it’ll be an iconic destination. It’ll put Miami on the global map for soccer in terms of facilities. It’ll be an entertainment destination, a soccer destination, it’ll be a place where Miamians can gather. I’m very optimistic about where we are and what we’ll be able to build there.”

The design for the new stadium was led by architecture firm Arquitectonica (Miami), which teamed up with HOK.

With the release of the renderings the club reiterated that the project for the park is 100% privately funded.

According to reports, the complex with contribute about $40 million in annual tax revenue to the City of Miami, as well as Miami-Dade County, the state of Florida and area public schools. It is also forecasted to create more than 13,000 jobs.

Freedom Park is slated for completion in 2022.
