Earlier this week, the American Concrete Institute announced the winners of the 2019 Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards, with Saudi Arabia-based King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (ITHRA) the recipient of the highest honor.

According to ACI, this award is given annually to a project that demonstrates the most creativity in the industry while also recognizing innovation, technology and excellence.

King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture

Known as “Ithra”—the Arabic word for enrichment—the ITHRA encompasses 85,000 square meters (914,930 square feet) and stands 90 meters tall. The structure is supported by a 3-meter-thick (over 9-feet-thick) raft foundation.

Earlier this week, the American Concrete Institute announced the winners of the 2019 Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards, with Saudi Arabia-based King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (ITHRA) the recipient of the highest honor.

Stability is achieved within the structure using a reinforced concrete core that acts as a propped cantilever. Other design properties that make this project unique are its post-tensioned slabs that span 15.9 meters, sloped concrete walls, ramps, and its twisting and inclined reinforced concrete columns complete with a decorative concrete finish.

According to ACI, the columns supporting the elevated slabs are also inclined, resulting in a horizontal thrust force at each end of the column lift. However, for the forces to be carried back to the core, post-tensioned slabs act as structural diaphragms.

The project was completed in 2017 and is surrounded by Knowledge Park, a 220,000-square-meter park space that is reported to inspire the imagination.

Other Awards

In order to be eligible for winning an Excellence in Concrete Construction Award, projects need to be winners at a local ACI chapter level, and then submitted by that chapter, or chosen by one of the Institute’s international partners.

The vetting process involved an expert panel of judges assessing each project based on architectural and engineering merit, creativity, innovative construction techniques and use of materials, ingenuity, sustainability and resilience and functionality.
