Late this summer, the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Reclamation (USBR), a federal agency that focuses on water resource management, announced the launch of a new competition for innovations in protecting steel structures from corrosion.

The competition, known as Rust Busters, is being sponsored by the USBR and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This stage of the competition is open to outside-the-box methods of corrosion control, according to the federal agency.

“Water infrastructure in the United States is critical to the domestic economy, commerce and resource management,” the USBR writes.

Late this summer, the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Reclamation (USBR), a federal agency that focuses on water resource management, announced the launch of a new competition for innovations in protecting steel structures from corrosion.

“There are thousands of existing hydraulic steel structures that require regular maintenance and upkeep. Original methods to protect HSS are disfavored or no longer used due to environmental and safety concerns. Newer approaches to corrosion control suffer from higher costs, shorter service life, and reduced efficacy.”

In the first stage of the competition, which was completed in 2017, contestants wrote and submitted proposals pertaining to theories of corrosion protection for hydraulic steel structures. The second stage will apply these theories in a practical setting.

Now, the first phase of the second stage will include the presentation of research, with five participants moving onto the second phase receiving up to $50,000 each to demonstrate their research. Test coupons will be supplied by and evaluated by the USBR. Three winners will share the $100,000 final prize.

Submissions are being accepted until Jan. 16, 2020.
