With the extended deadline just announced for the third annual Elevation Awards, we will be counting down to the deadline (Oct. 18) with featured selections of this year’s nominees, giving readers a glimpse of the competition. Below is a selected nominee in the “Floor Coatings + Treatments” category.

Project: Select Milk Facility

Dairy companies Select Milk and Continental Dairy Facilities recently partnered together to build a new processing facility in Little Field, Texas, following Select’s values of “Setting a Higher Standard” for milk production.

When it came to the flooring for the plant, officials wanted to steer away from the typical tile floors.

“For this new production facility we wanted a floor that would be durable and low maintenance, hold up to the chemicals used in our production, be sanitary, and be safe for food handling and for our employees,” said Steven Cooper, President/General Manager of Diary Manufacturing Operations at Continental Diary. “We also wanted a floor that looks nice, since we have many international customers that will be visiting our new facility."

Dairy companies Select Milk and Continental Dairy Facilities recently partnered together to build a new processing facility in Little Field, Texas, following Select’s values of “Setting a Higher Standard” for milk production. When it came to the flooring for the plant, officials wanted to steer away from the tpical tile floors.

General contractor TW Hicks, Inc. suggested a Sikafloor PurCem polyurethane concrete flooring system, which meets FDA Food Code 2009, which specifies that food establishments must have floors that are smooth, durable and easily cleanable.

The facility will process over four million pounds of milk per day, producing dry milk powders, condensed milk, cream and butter, according to officials, so a flooring system needed to be able to handle cleanup of all the different products.

The installation of the 130,000-square-foot production floor began with Hicks preparing the substrate, which meant accommodating a fiber-reinforced concrete they hadn’t anticipated.

“We had to use a PurCem Scratch Coat as a primer before we put down the negotiated floor system,” said Kurt Dreger, Business Development Manager/Operations Manager at T.W. Hicks.

They then applied Sikafloor 22NA PurCem, and broadcast with Sikafloor Aggregate-508 to rejection. The next steps were to trowel-apply the PurCem 29NAtop coat, followed by the Sikafloor 510 Polysaspartic Top Coat in gray beige, with the goal of providing chemical resistance while producing an aesthetic finish.

“We had a lot of delays due to construction issues, but fortunately PurCem is very user friendly, so we were able to do large areas at a time,” Dreger said. “Sika Flooring was able to provide the materials in totes, which expedited the mixing process.”

Today, officials say that the floor looks great and is performing up to expectation.
