NC Bridge Work Resumes After Girder Error

Work on the Hawthorne Lane Bridge, located in Charlotte, North Carolina, is set to resume after a number of delays. Construction on the bridge stopped completely back in January due to incorrectly sized girders.

According to Charlotte NPR news station WFAE, the bridge is being rebuilt as part of the $150 million LYNX Gold Line streetcar extension. The girder work was ceased earlier this year when workers found that the beams’ curvature wasn’t quite right.

The Charlotte Area Transit System noted back in January that the girders did “not fit the specifications for alignment,” and that work would cease at the time.

“The vertical alignment of the girders is not in tolerance. This means, the curvature in the girders does not fit required contract specifications,” CATS went on to detail, according to WFAE.

The issue was initially discovered when workers found that the replacement girders didn’t align correctly. Contractor Johnson Bros. Corp worked with the manufacturer to correct the issue, and was ultimately responsible for the cost of the mistake.

At the time of the finding in January, The Charlotte Observer reported that the girders were anchored securely to the bridge end bents, resulting in an alignment issue connected to elevation, not structural integrity.

The bridge was originally scheduled to reopen in March, but that date has been bumped back by a month, with the overall project slated for opening by the end of 2020 or the beginning of 2021.

It left the fabrication shop not meeting the contract? Why did it then ship? Inspected at the shop - receipt inspected prior to installation??
