MO Announces Bridges Available for Free

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) recently announced that a number of bridges were available for free. The catch? Interested parties must pay for structure relocation.

Karen Daniels, who works with MoDOT, noted that a federal law mandates that the state provides the public with equal opportunity to have the structures for free. Daniels added that since there are plans to use federal funding for bridge replacement, “we have to make that bridge for use by another party.”

MoDOT Bridge Giveaway

MoDOT’s website lists eight bridges currently available for free, though the department specifies that since developing a plan for reuse of a historic bridge is a long process, some of the structures listed do not have a completed rehabilitation analysis. This means that if bridge rehabilitation is later found to be cost effective, it will be removed as an offering in the giveaway.

The bridges on the list are also eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, or have already been marked as being on the list. The structures available include:

The others on the list include: Highway 40 Bridge over Salt Creek and Katy Trail; Poplar Bluff Viaduct; Leeper Bridge; and Bridge 076001.4, Long Branch Bridge.

Who Wants Old Bridges?

Daniels also added that historic preservation organizations are not the only entities potentially interested in the structures: She also named city parks departments, trail groups and in the past, there had been a group that taught bridge painting who were also interested in one of the bridges.

“People find out about this program and they just periodically look to see what we have available. Some people come back time after time after time just waiting for the perfect bridge for their purposes,” Daniels said.

Those interested need to submit proposals by March 2020.
