MAD Architects Design Hyperloop

Beijing-based architecture firm MAD Architects has recently announced a collaboration project with Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HyperloopTT) for a new elevated transport system design.

The two previously collaborated for the 2020 Expo in Dubai.

About HyperloopTT

In 2013, it was reported that Elon Musk—who founded Tesla Motors—was the first to introduce hyperloop technology to the world. The idea was simple: a transportation system that uses a depressurized cylinder made up of a series of steel tubes that could levitate passenger pods and transport them at high speeds over a cushion of air.

Beijing-based architecture firm MAD Architects has recently announced a collaboration project with Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HyperloopTT) for a new elevated transport system design.

However, Musk open-sourced the project, inviting others to expand on his concept, hopefully turning the idea into a reality.

According to MAD, HyperloopTT has been working since Musk’s 2013 announcement to develop answers to urban issues with hyper transportation technology, such as traffic congestion, pollution and overcrowding.

By 2016, HyperloopTT was reported to be a main competitor of Hyperloop One—another version of the transportation technology developed by New York-based architectural and design group Bjarke Ingels Group.

In the spring of 2017, HyperloopTT announced that it was one step closer to completing the construction of the world’s first full-scale Passenger Hyperloop Capsule. The official reveal took place at HyperloopTT’s research and development center in Toulouse, France, the following year.

Wasting no time after the event, by February 2018, the company entered an agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency to study the possibility of a Hyperloop system between Chicago and Cleveland.

Just months later, in April, the company signed an additional agreement with Aldar Properties PJSC, the developer behind Yas Island's Formula 1 racing circuit, to begin construction on the Abu Dhabi Hyperloop project, which is slated for completion in 2020. According to CNBC, the 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) line will be developed close on the border of the Abu Dhabi and Dubai emirates, and will be completed in several phases.

The New Design

Developed by team members Ma Yansong, Dang Qun, Yosuke Hayano, Dixon Lu, Matthew Pugh, Wang Tao, Chris Nolop and Nathan Kiatkulpiboone, the pylon HyperloopTT design is raised roughly 7 meters (23 feet) aboveground compared to competing innovations and includes green walkways along the tunnels’ roof. The choice was made with the idea of avoiding common urban obstacles, while also emphasizing urban farming opportunities.

MAD envisions that the groundbreaking transportation system could be integrated in both urban and rural areas, even remote deserts.

Regarding sustainable energy, the travel system is covered with bendable solar panel skin modules, which are used to power the Hyperloop itself, in addition to LEDs which are slated to function as interactive information boards. The LEDs also serve a second purpose to plants and crop developments found below, promoting a self-sustaining, eco-friendly environment.

The design also uses bladeless wind turbine “forests,” which are expected to be placed along certain sections of the track, lowering energy costs and supplying the technology with additional power sources.

MAD envisions that the groundbreaking transportation system could be integrated in both urban and rural areas, even remote deserts.

In taking the next steps, the team plans to integrate its full-scale passenger capsule for human trials in 2020.
