Toward the end of last month, global coatings manufacturer AkzoNobel announced that the company had provided coatings for China’s first domestically built polar icebreaker, known as Xue Long 2.

According to the company, the 12,366-ton research vessel was coated with Intershield 163 Inerta 160 from AkzoNobel's International product range, which is known for performing in -50 C and has been used over 1,600 ships and icebreakers.

The company’s coatings were used both on the exterior and interior of the ship, with the Inertia 160 system being used on the bottom and sides of the icebreaker’s hull. The coating system is also known for its anti-corrosion properties, surface smoothness and a resistance to cracking.

Toward the end of last month, global coatings manufacturer AkzoNobel announced that the company had provided coatings for China’s first domestically built polar icebreaker, known as Xue Long 2.

“As a pioneer in providing best-in-class marine coatings and solutions globally we’re thrilled to have worked with the Polar Research Institute of China to provide coatings for the Xue Long 2,” said Jean-Michel Gauthier, Managing Director of AkzoNobel’s Marine and Protective Coatings business.

“We’re delighted that the proven performance of our International brand has been recognized, along with our long track record and extensive experience.”

The Xue Long 2, which has greater structural strength than the first icebreaker of the same name, is slated to facilitate China’s ability to conduct inspections in polar regions, and is also equipped with two-way icebreaking capacity. The vessel is also equipped with 7,000 sensory points that collect friction data and other information to help develop future vessel designs.

The vessel is slated to be used later this year in China’s 36th Antarctic expedition.
