With the extended deadline just announced for the third annual Elevation Awards, we will be counting down to the deadline (Oct. 18) with featured selections of this year’s nominees, giving readers a glimpse of the competition. Below is a selected nominee in the “Renovation/Retrofit” category.

Project: Pier 17

An anchor to New York City’s South Street Seaport redevelopment project, Pier 17 had a lot of requirements for its coating.

SHoP Architects had four essential demands for the metal coatings supplier: due to its location on the East River five miles from the Atlantic Ocean, the coating had to include a long-term warranty covering film integrity, chalk and color fade; the coating had to be solvent-free to help the project earn LEED certification for the exterior curtain wall components; and the coatings applicator had to be certified by both the International Standards Organization and the coatings manufacturer.

An anchor to New York City’s South Street Seaport redevelopment project, Pier 17 had a lot of requirements for its coating.

To meet the first requirement, PPG’s Duranar powder topcoat over a liquid primer was recommended. For the rest of the demands, PPG turned to Spectrum Metal Finishing, which, in addition to being ISO-certified and a long-time PPG/CAP certified applicator, is one of the few companies to operate liquid- and powder-coating lines in the same facility.

PPG and Spectrum Metal Finishing worked with the SHoP Architects to develop a custom color for the aluminum curtain wall extrusions on Pier 17, as the firm desired a mill-finished aluminum with an industrial look and a clear topcoat.

An unusual aspect of the Pier 17 project was the application of PPG Duranar liquid coatings, which are designed primarily for exterior metal, on more than 500 interior wall panels. The panels are visible through two stacked rows of 20-foot-tall light boxes that compose much of the building facade. To finish this part of the project, Spectrum developed a unique stencil for the wall panels that diffuses sunlight as it pours through the light boxes.

The pattern was executed by painting the metal panels with a silver-grey PPG Duranar Sunstorm coating, then applying the stencil and painting the panels again with a bone-white PPG Duranar coating.

After the second coat of paint dried, the stencil was peeled off. During the day, sunlight streams through the light boxes, strikes the dot pattern and diffuses. At night, the dot pattern helps disperse a spray of primary colors projected onto the building, giving the facade a bright, carnival-like appearance.

PPG Duranar liquid coatings were selected for the light box application because they eliminate the risk of chalking and fading of the panels, which are almost constantly exposed to UV light.

The building now houses major tenants such as ESPN and its rooftop houses an open-air marketplace and concert venue.
