NJ Bridge Rehabilitation Work Awarded

The New Jersey Department of Transportation has awarded a $2,971,705.67 contract to perform deck replacement on Bridge CR 607 over Route 295 in Gloucester County, New Jersey, to South State, Inc., of Bridgeton, New Jersey.

South State, Inc. was the lowest of five bidders, which included:

  • Loftus Construction, Inc. of Cinnaminson, New Jersey, in the amount of $3,136,000;
  • Driscoll Construction Co., Inc, doing business as M.J. Driscoll of Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, in the amount of $3,367,111.35;
  • Midatlantic Construction, LLC, of Barnegat, New Jersey, in the amount of $3,481,808.89; and
  • IEW Construction Group of Trenton, New Jersey, in the amount of $3,549,693.23.

The project was estimated to cost up to $5 million.

Scope of Work

This project involves bridge deck replacement and rehabilitation of the Tomlin Station Road Bridge CR 607 over Route 296. The work is estimated to be completed by Oct. 16, 2021.

The awarded contract will oversee cleaning and coating of exposed top flanges of beams with a prime coating application. The steel will be hand- or power-tool cleaned and coated with a three-coat organic zinc-rich system. The owner-approved manufacturers for this process include Carboline, International Paint, MAB, Ameron (PPG) and Sherwin-Williams. The top flange of the existing stringers currently in contact with the concrete slab and the rocker bearings at the pier could have remnants of a lead coating system. Certifications to SSPC-QP1 and QP 2 are required.

The project also includes 46 square yards of epoxy waterproofing application. The owner-approved manufacturers include Kaufman Products, Sika and Simpson Strong Tie. Work will also include application of a silane penetrating water-repellent sealer to exposed surfaces of the existing abutments and wing walls that are remain in place. The owner-approved manufacturers are BASF, MAPEI, Euclid and Sika.

A Level 1 Class-A containment system is required in accordance to SSPC Guide 6I for surface preparation of all structural steel, bearings and appurtenances. Hazardous waste disposal is also required.
