With the extended deadline just announced for the third annual Elevation Awards, we will be counting down to the deadline (Oct. 18) with featured selections of this year’s nominees, giving readers a glimpse of the competition. Below is a selected nominee in the “Roof Coatings + Systems” category.

Project: CHOC Children's Hospital

CHOC Children's Hospital, in Orange, California, recently decided that it needed a place for children to enjoy themselves during their time of recovery. The hospital, however, lacked an appropriate space to do so.

So, it turned to the roof. Therefore, it needed a sustainable and high-performance roof system.

Tremco

The hospital asked Tremco Roofing Field Advisor Steve Tolsma and the Tremco team to inspect the existing roof and make recommendations on a long-term roofing solution that could coexist with the outdoor play area it planned to install and could also be installed while the hospital remained open.

Additionally, the existing roof system was in very poor shape with multiple leaks, making it an eyesore for those who look down onto the roof from the windows above.

The hospital asked Tremco Roofing Field Advisor Steve Tolsma and the Tremco team to inspect the existing roof and make recommendations on a long-term roofing solution that could coexist with the outdoor play area it planned to install and could also be installed while the hospital remained open.

After performing an initial inspection and diagnostics, the team proposed using the company’s AlphaGuard Bio system. The system was ideal for the area providing a high-performance solution with an almost zero odor application and the flashing system easily conformed to the screens and equipment installed over the roof.

Multiple core cuts were taken to determine the existing insulation system, which provided the information necessary to design a tapered insulation system that eliminated the ponding issue and the existing roof was removed down to the concrete deck.

The tapered insulation and a primed gypsum cover board were adhered in low-rise foam adhesive. While the AlphaGuard Bio was applied in a three-step process that consisted of the installation of a granulated base sheet over the gypsum board, followed by the AlphaGuard Bio base coat with an embedded polyester mat and then the AlphaGuard Bio topcoat applied within 72 hours.

The quick cure time allowed the contractor the flexibility to install the roofing and allow other trades and hospital staff to access areas within hours of installation.

Despite the complex design, the entire project was completed on time and on budget.
