Specialty chemicals company Nouryon recently announced a series of investments for the capacity increase and efficiency improvements at its metal alkyls plant located in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

According to the company’s media release, “The projects will enable the company to continue meeting growing demand from customers in the polymer industry and improve supply reliability in Europe.”

Nouryon

Specialty chemicals company Nouryon recently announced a series of investments for the capacity increase and efficiency improvements at its metal alkyls plant located in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

“Projects such as these reflect our strategy of accelerating growth through operational excellence and strategic investments tailored to the needs of our customers,” said Johan Landfors, Managing Director Polymer Chemistry at Nouryon.

Recent company investments include automating raw material handling and improving overall efficiency and safety at the site by avoiding potential exposure risks. However, Nouryon also plans to save on transportation costs, as the most recent project allows for shipment of materials in bulk.

“The Rotterdam plant has increased production capacity by more than 40 percent in the last three years, and this latest investment series positions us for sustained growth,” said Jeroen Jungschlager, Rotterdam Plant Manager. “It will enable us to move greater volumes with improved reliability and consistency to our customers.”

Recent Acquisition

In addition to Nouryon’s company investments, it has recently completed the acquisition of Zhejiang Friend Chemical Co.—reportedly the largest Chinese producer of triethyl aluminum (TEAL).

TEAL is a metal alkyl used in the production of high-volume polymers such as polypropylene and polyethylene.

The acquisition includes products, technology, customer lists and a manufacturing site in Jiaxing, located 100 kilometers (621 miles) southwest of Shanghai. The company will also evaluate opportunities to expand operations at Jiaxing. Friend’s approximately 60 employees will join Nouryon, including the company’s founder, HaiQing Zhang, who will serve as a senior consultant.

Nouryon says that the acquisition has strengthened its leadership position in the metal alkyls industry.
