Earlier this month, the Federal Railroad Administration announced the availability of $244 million in funding for railroad infrastructure projects.

According to the FRA, the Notice of Funding Opportunity will cover projects that include measures to increase rail transportation safety, efficiency and reliability. At least 25% of the available funding will be reserved for projects in rural communities.

Eligible projects, which covers both freight and passenger rail, also include endeavors that seek to address congestion issues, high-way grade railroad crossings, line relocation and deploying railroad safety technology, among other projects. Priority will also be given to endeavors “where the proposed federal share of total costs does not exceed 50[%],” noted the FRA in a press release.

Earlier this month, the Federal Railroad Administration announced the availability of $244 million in funding for railroad infrastructure projects.

Projects will be evaluated based on if they support certain objectives, including:

  • Economic vitality;
  • How federal funding will be used;
  • Innovation in safety improvements and project deliverability; and
  • Adopting life-cycle cost accounting, among other objectives.

"These CRISI grants support safe rail systems around the country, and I encourage eligible parties with creative and innovative projects to apply by the deadline," said FRA Administrator Ronald L. Batory.

The Federal Register made the posting on Aug. 19. Applications for funding will be accepted up to 60 days after the posting.

“The Consolidated Rail Infrastructure & Safety Improvements grant program is an important resource for railroads to upgrade infrastructure and for communities to enhance safety on tracks and at railroad crossings,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao.
