Manufacturer Behr Paint Company (Santa Ana, California) announced its 2020 Color of the Year last week via pop-up display in Napa Valley, California. Dubbed a meadow-inspired green, Back to Nature S340-4 is influenced by the desire to connect with nature, the company says.

“As we look ahead to a new decade, Back To Nature encourages us to reengage with the natural world, which we know can have a real, positive impact on our well-being,” said Erika Woelfel, Vice President of color and creative services at Behr.

“Everyone has a different way of engaging with nature. Whether you’re biking on a forest path, canoeing on a lake or walking on the beach, green is prevalent in nearly every outdoor landscape—it is easily nature’s favorite color.”

Behr says it picked the color because it “captures the emotion of wilderness landscapes and indoor gardens, while being subtle enough to serve as a new neutral.”

The fresh and slightly yellow-based green aims to serve as an ideal backdrop to satisfy the desire for a soft landing at home and reflects societal trends toward embracing the outdoors as a collective and personal self-care activity.

Earlier this summer, Behr released its 2020 Color Trends palette, of which Back to Nature is the cornerstone.

Again, those palettes are:

  • Worldhood – This section of the palette includes rich hues that aim to deepen the warmth of a space. “Colors within Worldhood create an inviting environment, perfect for the hospitality industry,” said Woelfel. “Customers of restaurants, hotels and other businesses will feel drawn to the rustic tones inspired by exotic travels that reflect natural rugged landscapes.” Colors include: Rumba Orange M230-7, Charismatic PPU6-14, Bubble Shell S160-3, Cider Spice S210-5 and Red Pepper PPU2-02.
  • Restore – This grouping aims to surround people with restorative qualities to encourage balance and mostly consists of blues and greens including: Secret Meadow S360-6, Back to Nature S340-4, Light Drizzle N480-1, Bluebird PPU15-12 and Dragonfly PPU12-03.
  • Atmospheric – Layers of neutrals and pastels allow this subgroup to appeal to both modern and traditional environments, according to Behr, and includes Dusty Lilac N110-1, Creamy Mushroom PPU5-13, Painter’s White PPU18-08, Battleship Gray N360-4 and Graphic Charcoal N500-6.
