Global coatings company PPG (Pittsburgh) recently announced in an emailed press release that its coatings were among those used on the Calgary Central Library in Calgary, Canada.

That project, which opened to the public in November 2018, was named one of Architectural Digest’s 12 most anticipated buildings.

Global coatings company PPG (Pittsburgh) recently announced that its coatings were among those used on the Calgary Central Library in Calgary, Canada.

The library features a dynamic triple-glazed facade that incorporates more than 460 alternating polygonal panels of fritted glass and iridescent aluminum.

Designed by Snøhetta, of Oslo, Norway, and Dialog, of Calgary, the architects specified PPG’s Duranar coatings for the window frames and extruded aluminum components. The goal was for the coating to mimic snowflakes, or cracking on a lake, according to the company.

Hydro Portland, of Oregon, and Apel Extrusions, of Calgary, coated the finished metal in two colors:  standard Bright White and Broken Ice, a custom color topped by a pearlescent clearcoat.

The 24,000-square-foot library is designed to achieve LEED Gold certification.
