Technology Publishing Co. is excited to announce that the deadline has been extended for the third annual Elevation Awards. Nominations will now be accepted through Oct. 18.

The awards program honors projects in both aesthetic and technical categories—ranging from residential exteriors and commercial renovations to floor coatings and air barriers—throughout the commercial coatings industry.

“In 2018, the competition’s second year saw a wider pool of nominees with even bigger and better projects than the year before,” said Brandy Hadden, editor of PaintSquare Daily News and commercial editor of PaintSquare Press.

“The Bloomberg Center, which won our 2018 Judges’ Choice Award, really exemplified all facets of this honor and combined high aesthetic appeal with high performance, showcasing what the professionals in this industry can really do.”

The nomination deadline is nearing for the Elevation Awards, which honors projects in both aesthetic and technical categories—ranging from residential exteriors and commercial renovations to floor coatings and air barriers—throughout the commercial coatings industry. The six categories (in addition to the high honor of Judges’ Choice) and brief descriptions for this year’s awards are as follows:

Aesthetics Award Categories

Exteriors, Commercial + Public Buildings

This award is given for the effective use of coatings and other decorative treatments to achieve aesthetic effects that enhance the exterior of a commercial building—such as those used for retail, hospitality, lodging or entertainment—or a public building, such as a legislative chamber, a school or a railway station.

Interiors, Commercial + Public Buildings

This award is given for the effective use of coatings and other substrate treatments to enhance the interior of a commercial or public building. Examples include buildings used for retail, hospitality, restaurant, entertainment, transportation and education.

Renovation/Retrofit

This award is given for use of coatings to enhance the appeal of a building renovation or retrofit, in terms of both aesthetics and functional value, such as energy performance. (The project may be a residential, commercial or public structure.)

Technical Award Categories

Floor Coatings + Treatments

This award is given for outstanding achievement in selection and installation of a floor coating or treatment that excels in aesthetic effects, durability and maintainability. (Applications must make a persuasive case for how a project achieves durability/maintainability.)

Air Barriers + Moisture Management

This award is given for a liquid-applied air barrier system, including related taping and flashing materials, that excelled in design and installation detailing. (Applications must include photos of the project in progress, and reference to specifications/design documents.)

Roof Coatings + Systems

The Roof Coatings award will be given to a successful roof coating project that has achieved demonstrable energy savings and life extension of the roofing substrate on a building. (Projects must be judged on technical merits, with energy use measured during the past three to five years. Applications can reference energy cost records and include an endorsement/statement from the building owner.)

Judges' Choice Award

Drawing from individual category winners, judges will select an overall winner to receive the Judges' Choice Award, which recognizes an outstanding architecture project that best exemplifies the seamless combination of compelling aesthetics and high performance in use of coatings and other substrate treatments.

Judges, Dates, Fees

The Elevation Awards will be judged by six experts in the fields of color, design, renovations, building-envelope technology and more.

The judges are:

  • Jill Pilaroscia, IACC, Colour Studio, Architectural + Product Color Consultation;
  • Jeff Theo, PCS, Vice-President of Business Development, Vulcan Painters;
  • Kenneth A. Trimber, PCS, President, KTA-Tator Inc.;
  • Andre Desjarlais, Program Manager for the Building Envelope Systems Research Program, Oak Ridge National Laboratory;
  • Joseph Berchenko, AIA, CSI, CCS, Director MasterSpec Specifications; and
  • Cherise Lakeside, CSI, CDT, Specifier with LSW Architects.

“I’ve had the pleasure of serving as a judge for the first two Elevation Awards and look forward to being on the panel again this year,” said Trimber.

“The submissions for the first two years have been well-prepared, thorough and thought-provoking. The aspect of judging that I appreciate the most is the opportunity it provides to learn more about the complexities of each project and how the teams managed the challenges they faced. The background information is as compelling to me as the appearance and functionality of the finished product.”

Important dates and fees include:

  • There is a fee of $295 per entry;
  • The nomination period now closes Oct. 18;
  • Select nominees will be featured in PaintSquare Daily News; and
  • Winners will also receive coverage in the Winter issue of PaintSquare Press.
